Sucks but some things are true unfortunately. Sarah represented a percentage of the thinking, living and doing of a part of Alaska. She didn't represent me. But it still stings when she comes up as if I had something to do with that. Alaska gets a lot of shit for things too. And we're probably big enough to be a region. Or maybe two.

Mah coon dog died,
I got fired from mah job,
and worst of all......
I ran outta beer.

Some people think that Georgians are redneck hicks. I used to think that also until I moved here in 1989 from Miami. The Atlanta area is just as cosmopolitan as any large city in the U.S. or in Europe. And I have traveled in the British Isles and France. I love it here in Georgia even though I am not a country music fan and I live in a totally red county.

What the OP is pointing out is primarily to the regional exclusionists, that there is no redeeming value to any region of the South. That's not the least bit true, but it's how they think. I've seen too many examples of that sentiment on DU to ignore, or shrug off as "isolated posts."

That doesn't mean I won't continue to implore people to discard such prejudices

His memories of growing up are that SC was full of very intelligent, progressive people and he had a great time living there.

Anyone who bashes the south is pretty close-minded and eager to display their ignorance...no part of this country is uniform in its beliefs and you can truly find good people everywhere.

Rural/smalltown Kentucky/Tennessee border. BEAUTIFUL countryside. Extreme poverty in a
visual line-of-sight with opulent mansions. Though there WERE some wonderful progressives,
there was a massive amount of unabashed, unashamed ignorance too.
.
I would not go back there. Even for the great ramshackle BBQ shacks scattered along the back
roads -- seemingly all run by 70-year-old men who get up at 3 AM to start the pit fire burning.
HUGE cheap ambrosial BBQ sandwiches and $1 (back in the late 70's) heaping bowls of burgoo --
a stew of all the leftovers from the week -- maybe 6 or 7 different types of meat and 12-15
types of veggies in your bowl.
.
I also lived in Atlanta. WONDERFUL, nice folks and as cosmopolitan as you wanna be. I WOULD
go back there.
.
.
.
I think the South is something like here in Arizona. Of COURSE there are nice, caring, sweet,
enlightened and aware progressives here (Tucson being something of a stronghold for that),
but the state is largely populated with ignorant teabaggers and teabagger Lites... especially in
the more heavily-populated regions up north.
.
So do all Arizonans merit being looked upon as RW asshats? Of course not.
.
But has Arizona in general earned its reputation as a contender for being the asshole of the nation.
.
Damn straight, li'l cowpoke!!

Ya just can't explain it, can you? I don't like country music, but that's me. But the warmth, the ease with which people hang out and enjoy life, the wonderful stories and conversations, the largeness of the characters...it's so sticky and intimate and human. And there are far more progressives than non-Southerners think.

I gots to go get my fix soon. It's cold, wet and dark up here in the PNW, and though the ease of a good economy and nothing that will bite your ass if you go out in the woods is nice, I miss a big porch and water that's not cold and the blues and the food...Lord, the food.

people don't understand this way of life.
My wife and I will be moving into a more reasonably priced home in April...I already know I will have 20 or more people with pickups waiting to load up and help when we move...THAT is what I'm talking about.

I have a bo at work who is closing on his house in January...we already have the plans to get him moved..there will probably be 50 people there....THAT is what I am talking about.

It's just a different life...and it's a good life. And of course we all dont listen to country...I was in a rock band up until a year ago.

The point is...don't judge us by a few idiots.I can't speak for everyone but I live such an amazing life now with all my bo's and the feeling of community I get here that I never felt anywhere else.

I am a progressive...and I am at home in the south

There are lots of open minded people in the cities.

Unfortunately, out in the country, where I live now, they pretty much live up to the bad stereotypes. Lots of angry white guys with guns. I don't dare engage in conversation with them because they might blow up and get mad. They cannot deal with people who are different from them.

I've been told I'm going to hell--seriously.

There are no county Democratic organizations in this part of the state, because they get no state or federal or DNC funding. Whoever is the county chair has to spend money for all expenses. There aren't any Democratic politicians, DAs or judges, either.
