(55,476 posts)John Lennon died today. I still remember it like it was yesterday.
John Lennon's first album since he "retired" had come out, and it was a nice mix of his and his wife's songs.
I had grown up with the Beatles. Born in 1970, my parents had exposed me to The Beatles, the only "Rock and Roll" band they thought was worth anything.
But oh god, they were good.
I remember being a four year old and dancing around in circles to "Hey Jude" until I got sick.
I remember "Ticket To Ride" had a whole different meaning to this Roller Coaster junkie.
And suddenly, one of the Beatles, was dead.
Not just dead, but killed senselessly.
A man who never hurt anyone, someone who only preached peace and justice, killed senselessly for no reason.
By someone following the Anti-Hero's Journey.
Even at ten, I knew this was bad.
I listened to the vigils on the radio (the radio was my only friend during these times) and felt the same pain any other Beatles fan did.
I still miss you John.

(1,831 posts)Or certainly not pious, many would argue that existence of the universe is proof of a creative force. Simply because we've bastardized the concept into a money making venture doesn't negate its' existence. A true unified theory may never come...

(13,324 posts)But I hear what you're saying. So far as anyone knows now, the universe on the largest scale consists of long, thin filaments of galaxies with massive, roughly spherical voids in between. Which certainly implies a "pattern" (of sorts) to everything.

(55,476 posts)It is a natural force
We are the product of natural forces, stars which exploded billions of years ago. Not a "creative force" that is, a god.
cbrer
(1,831 posts)It would seem to me, in my ignorant state, that at least some natural forces, were/are creative forces as well. That, plus the theories of evolution and natural mutation yield tantalizing clues to forces beyond our current levels of understanding. Which is all I'm really trying to point out. We don't know about the "god" thing. We know about the religion thing. We know a little about natural cosmological forces. But there are many more questions than answers. Heck I'm pretty sure we don't even know how to frame all the questions yet. And lack procedures and apparati with which to gain insight.
After all, the sonofabitch might deserve a good ass kicking anyways! No one is above an ass kicking.
But proving its existence as a prerequisite for violence becomes problematic...
Cheers!

(14,198 posts)Then he did one on with Christ.
We, being humans, just kept ticking him off.
I have come to believe, in the last couple of years, that God finally threw up his hands in the early 1950'd and now sets back enjoys us suffering. There are a handful that he thinks is cool thus they seem blessed. I thought I was one he liked, now, I think no mater how good I try to be, I'm going to hell.

How could there not be a God? I find it hard to understand how people can NOT believe in God.
But I'm not talking about religion or beliefs of what happens when we die, I don't have the answers to all that and I don't feel I need to have faith in anything that I am unsure of in my heart.
Without some kind of incredibly intelligent force behind it, the universe could not possibly exist. There are those who would agree with this statement, but then still say there is no God. To me, this creative force "IS" God, and whatever else mere humans have to say about 'Him' is neither here nor there. Some people may be right, others are obviously wrong, but then again we could ALL be wrong.

"Everything that comes into existence has a cause, the universe came into existence thus it had a cause and that cause was God."
The Cosmological Argument starts out with a decent premiss and then plunges head first into stupidity.
"Everything that comes into existence has a cause" this makes sense and fits with our observations (except maybe on the quantum scale) but beyond this point, it fails.
"The universe came into existence" this is where that argument starts to fail. The closest we have to evidence that the universe had a beginning is the big bang but as I've said in part 1 we don't know what was before the big bang. The universe could have existed in some form before the big bang, the big bang (and thus the universe) could have came out of another universe or some combination of the two. We don't know.
"and that cause was God" This is where the argument goes from a fail to an epic fail. Even if the universe had a beginning, that does not mean what cause the universe was some deity. It is much more plausible the the universe would have came out of another universe though some natural process.
To get out of the two fatal problems of the cosmological argument creationists claim that infinity is impossible, there needs to be a first cause because with out a first cause you get an infinite regress and infinity is impossible.
Of course infinity is not impossible. When asked why its impossible they will probably say something like "you can't have an infinite number of points between two points" (paraphrased). This argument is bullshit because infinity is not a number, infinity is a mathematical concept. Of course you can't have an infinite number of points between two
points but outside the two points it goes on infinitely, forever.

(7,099 posts)They clasp bitterness like it was something to be proud of, and are as closed-minded as any kind of fundie.
Well, I actually tried to reply to this post 2 days ago but my computer wouldn't let me so I copied it and pasted it and am re-trying now.
I didn't come to believe in God until my early 20's. I didn't come to this through a church, a Bible-thumper, or the Bible itself. I'm not trying to convert anyone, and I'm not bitter, and I'm not offended by anyone who does not believe the same as I do.
I am continually amazed at the vitriol expressed at people who believe in God, while looking at topics online. It's as if it is politically incorrect to have such beliefs. When I was three years old I was in the middle of an untouched old-growth, big-tree forest for the first time. This was the beginning of my awe and wonder and my later inability to NOT believe in an "intelligent creative force" that it makes sense to me to refer to as God.
Someone wanting to 'kill' God does not shock me at all, I know how people can get disillusioned in what to really believe when Life strikes a hard blow too many times in a row.
I too, have been around the kind of Christian people who told me I am going to hell if I haven't been 'saved' in the manner they believe I should have been. I'm fine with that. I can only come to my beliefs through my own Life experiences; this is why we all don't believe the same way.
It is important, however, to remain changeable. That is my opinion.
