Star Trek: Into Darkness Is Being Particularly Coy About Their Next Villain — Who Is John Harrison?

http://www.crushable.com/2012/12/11/entertainment/star-trek-into-darkness-sequel-villain-benedict-cumberbatch-khan-gary-mitchell-john-harrison-chris-pine-zachary-quinto-kirk-spock-j-j-abrams/

J. J. Abrams and the other fine folk associated with Star Trek: Into Darkness are playing their cards preeeetty close to their chests as far as this sequel goes. They’ve already released a promo trailer, screenshots, and press releases, but we still don’t know which Star Trek villain Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing alongside Zachary Quinto‘s Spock andChris Pine’s Kirk.

As someone who only watched the TV show growing up, and has a vague and variant knowledge of the movies up until 2009, I am the lowest sort of Trekkie. I would honestly be ashamed to even use the term to describe myself, but I had a true connection with the characters from Next Generation, so I’m clinging to it. So I’m the bottom of the totem pole of ‘people this would be interesting to’, and it’s still interesting to me. So just imagine how tantalizing this is to the true fans out there. J.J., you are playing a coy, dangerous game and I love it.

based on the above screenshot, there are two main predictions for who the villain is for this film. The first prediction is that he’s Gary Mitchell. Gary appeared in the third episode of the first season of the original series, and he was a friend of Kirk’s. However, when the ship passes through a strange barrier, Gary is imbued with powers of telepathy and telekinesis, which make him aggressive toward the rest of the crew. He believes himself to be a god, and becomes impossible to reason with, forcing Kirk to maroon him on a planet, and ultimately kill him. Because the two are friends, it stands to reason that they could have a touching personal moment through a pane of glass.

OR. This villain could be Khan.

that photo just looks like it to me.

I'm thinking that when they pull Kahn out of the vault they will name the movie after him.

I am hoping the Enterprise crew saves Kahn and wakes him from his cryogenic slumber. Then circumstances require the warlord Kahn to make a choice where he opts to sacrifice his life for Spock or the crew. Instead of fighting to start Genesis, Kahn helps prevent Armageddon. Total poetic justice in this new alternate Trek reality.

a generic character name for minor random original series walk-on characters.

I don't think it will be Gary Mitchell, he's already shown up in the IDW comic (which is written by one of the Trek writers and has been officially cited as canon).

Khan is almost too obvious at this point. "John Harrison" was choked by Khan on the bridge of the Enterprise, though.

I'm sure when we find out who it really is we'll all be going "D'oh! How obvious!"

The Khan rumor was shot down months ago. The most recent rumor I've heard was that he is playing Sybok. Not a memorable character but he was Spock's half brother. His ears are not pointed in any of the scenes I have seen. Do we know for a fact his character is someone we've seen in the Star Trek universe(seen in the Trek movies or the original series?) It could be almost anyone if he was first introduced in the series.

http://trekmovie.com/2012/12/11/exclusive-kurtzman-orci-talk-about-cumberbatch-into-darkness-character-name-reveal/
TrekMovie: A few months back Bob told me that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character would be from Star Trek’s canon. Today we find out that he is named John Harrison. So are both of those things still true?

Alex Kurtzman: Well without revealing too much what I can tell you is that in the same spirit as “can the Enterprise be under water? What does that mean? How are we going to justify this? How are we going to explain it?” We went back and we talked a lot about things that made us want to make the first movie in the first place as fans. And what do we feel was successful for the fans. A lot of that had to do with honoring the history — honoring the show. But we also want to come up with a way to make the stories feel fresh and unpredictable. So without revealing too much, we applied the same thinking to Harrison.

and then there's this from Cumberbatch;
http://www.themarysue.com/jj-abrams-benedict-cumberbatch-star-trek-villain/
“He’s a terrorist; he operates as a terrorist. He has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers. He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he’s masterful in. He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation. It’s quite exciting to watch.”

“Giving away the full motivation would ruin it, but it’s personal. It’s also political, I think. He’s somebody who, at some point in the film, you should feel a certain amount of empathy towards his cause, if not his means.”

I was thinking Sybok possibly as well, but as you mention, no pointy ears.

I'm not really familiar with most of the "Enterprise" stories, but maybe they're pulling a character from there?

In the teaser trailer he says "I have returned" and in the Japanese trailer there is the additional line "Is there anything you wouldn't do to save your family?"

aaahhhh, suspence...

So Soran is a canon character...but he doesn't have any of the abilities "John Harrison" has.

They could be combining characters, but I really hope they're not.
