"Let's have a nice little tribute to George Harrison...oh and let's include Prince...."
Around 3:30, Prince takes this performance in a different direction and Tom Petty does his best to ignore it which seems to make Prince try even harder to crack him. Dani loves it. He seems to know what is coming right before Prince starts.
(btw, how do you embed YouTube with the start time set to 3:30 ?)

(46,757 posts)I don't think that was ab libbed because someone was there to catch Prince and Prince knew when to end the song on cue.
But I did like the notion that it was a competition.
In jazz pieces individual performers are given the latitude to showcase their individual talents. That's what I felt was going on in this piece.

(14,549 posts)there is a guy to stand Prince back up when he goes down backward in front of Petty. Also his guitar disappears when he throws it in the air (!?)

(4,209 posts)Prince was fantastic. And I'm not a Prince fan necessarily, but dang he can play guitar.

(14,549 posts)Rock played without attitude is not rock.
Eric Clapton, about 15 years back, named Prince as the best guitarist currently touring; said he was 'years ahead of everyone else.'

(4,209 posts)I don't care a ton for his music (and I know that sounds contradictory but it's not), but he's quite a writer and musician. I just had no idea until I saw this video what a great guitarist he is!

(14,549 posts)"Nothing Compares 2 U" and it really shows his song writing skills.
Prince is a dynamic performer and a masterful musician on guitar, bass and keys. Both of his parents were performing musicians. He plays and writes in many styles but the pop stylings of "Purple Rain" are probably what most associate with him. He is great live; wears you out just watching him.

(1,999 posts)Have you ever noticed that it is almost impossible to sing this song without sounding like George Harrison?
I was very annoyed at Prince's attempt to steal the show until I noticed how much Dhani seemed to be enjoying it.
