Living in Alaska we don't get a lot of large concerts and the ones that come up here aren't always my thing.
Seems the ones I want to see is when I'm out of town.
My last concert I went to was the Grateful Dead in Phoenix over twenty years ago.
What was yours?
MuseRider
(35,176 posts)Crosby, Stills and Nash in August. Four Tops and the Temptations (their current incarnations anyway) in March. That is it so far for concerts. We are lucky to get some good ones and have close locations to go to when they are not here.
Forgot, not really a concert, but Henry Rollins in October. That was really really fun.
Living in Alaska is pretty darned cool all by itself IMO.

It was several years ago, and it was outstanding. 🎶🎶🎶 This ole baby boomer was in heaven.
More recently I saw the newly released Queen concert - Hungarian Rhapsody - at a theater. And since I never got to see Queen live in concert (raising kids, no money etc...), it was the next best thing. Well done documentary and live concert footage. Love Freddie ! 👨 Love 'em all actually !

(873 posts)I really went to see Mark Knopfler. It was the 4th time I saw him. The other times he was more rocking and played more Dire Straits. I think he toned it down to not clash with Dylan.
I didn't expect much from Dylan. But Knopfler played on 2 or 3 songs. Dylan's voice was shot but he "sang" like an old time Chicago blues guy. It was very raspy and I don't think everyone would appreciate it. But he did have a very tight band that included guitarist Charlie Sexton.

(12,008 posts)Granted, I saw them almost 20 years ago, as a teenager. I don't know if I could take it now. So much shit was spewed on the audience that my SKIN was stained for days. (12,008 posts)I did once see Mortiis (I think that's how it's spelled - he was in Emperor and then did this weird sort of D&D player music, dressed as a kind of evil elf, with prosthetic ears, nose, claws, etc.), and it was terrible - laughable. All of the music was simply played back from CD or DAT, and his stage show consisted of him chasing a girl around the stage, strapping her to a table (which was just a flight case), and then pretending to disembowel her - lots of fake blood, of course.
It was pretty great to see the insane disappointment creep over the huge metal fans who HAD to be up front and were head-banging and screaming before he came on. There's that first bit where they're excited, then confused, then frustrated, and ultimately completely dejected.
After that show, the girl in the stage show quit, and a friend of mine replaced her. They dated for some number of months or years, I heard - I didn't see her much after that.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)That is pretty hilarious too.
I never liked Emperor though so I didn't miss Mortiis.
I would go see an Immortal show if I ever get chance though. I don't go in for all the dressing up like the kids do nowadays but there's some pretty good music in there behind all the buffoonery. lol Not at a Mortiis or Lordy show though. I'm gonna skip the upcoming Cradle of Filth show here even though a band I like is one of the opening acts (Decapitated - they'll probably get a 20~30 minutes set at most and that isn't worth it for all the other crap bands on the bill and what will most likely be ridiculous prices for tix).
I will go see Anthrax perform their entire Among The Living album though - I think that's in April. I'd say a very large proportion of the bands I listen to and go see live now started or had roots in the 80s (or earlier) so I understand you not caring much about stuff after that.

(12,008 posts)I rarely buy new albums, but for the last month I've been around my hometown, and a friend of mine owns a record store, so I try to buy a few things from him. Last two: Leonard Cohen, and SWANS. New albums, but by acts that have been around for 30 and nearly 50 years, respectively. The other new record I really liked was the new Dexys album - their first in 27 years.
What happened to the time when I used to go record shopping every week and always new what the cool new bands were? It doesn't seem like it was that long ago when I was hip.
They came to Mobile Alabama, of all places. It was also awesome to see the looks of horror on all the people that had no idea what they were and just went because there was a concert going on.

Populist_Prole
(5,364 posts)Which was a shame since I was a long time fan eager and exited to hear them live for the first time and had very close seats up front.
It was an outdoor show, and I don't know if that had an effect on the acoustics or placement of the amps, but from where I was the sound was horrible. Muddy and bottom-heavy. I could scarcely hear the chords of lead guitar, and so the whole show sounded more like a series of dull thuds with weak vocals and occasionally weak tinny sounding solo. It also didn't help that it was a time they were touring for the 'Load' album; and so they played too much of the plodding lame newer stuff.
I had a good time overall, but the music was quite a letdown. I began to think that maybe they are one of the bands that sound better in studio than live.

(12,132 posts)Saw them on tours for both their albums. The first one me and my girlfriend and my best friend and his girlfriend traveled to Jacksonville and made a weekend out of it. Party and fun and Jimmy Effin Page.
The second tour we all had our tickets already but my best friend who was supposed to be my best man at my upcoming wedding, died in a motorcycle accident. His girlfriend didn't want to go and she gave me their tickets and I couldn't bear to sell them so I sat there next to my best friend's empty seat and cried through most of the show. Some nearby friendly fans passed some good weed my way though and that helped some, toasting to Mike while Jimmy wailed the D&C solo under a green laser pyramid.

(30,481 posts)It became an "in memory of" concert for you. As you said, a "toasting" to mike.

(12,022 posts)2nd time seeing them! (
)The only one we have coming up is Suzanne Vega, and it's not until March. Usually we got to about one a month but there's nothing else coming that I HAD to see, unless we went to the Daft Punk tribute but that's on a Monday.
I hope some good new shows will be announced soon!
