I'm somewhat surprised the Hugh Jackman got nominated for Best Actor for Les Miserables. He was good, but not great.

Nice to see that Christoph Waltz and Tommy Lee Jones got nominated for Best Supporting Actor. I'd be very happy with either of them winning.

Ben Affleck got snubbed out of Best Director for Argo.

1. Are there any "great" movies this year?

Life of Pi got a ton of nominations, but the reviews I saw were really mixed on it. Same with Les Miz. Even Lincoln wasn't universally positive.

2. Lincoln and Django probably have the most staying power

both are very well acted and both directors have a huge cult following. Lincoln can also be shown in high school history classrooms, which will keep it around for a while.

Life of Pi is a classic and one of the best movies I've ever seen.
That said I don't know if it will win.

It should at least get the Oscar for best cinematography, which was absolutely incredible either in 3d or 2d. Just breathtaking.

It makes a difference, doesn't it. What kind of mood you are in, time of day, tired/no tired.

I get hooked on those quixotic little foreign films ... anyone see it or have an opinion?

Thanks!

without seeing any of the films they're in.

But the people doing the voting often seem to have not seen them either, so I'm in good shape.

11. Best Actress this year has both the youngest and oldest nominee in history
Fri Jan 11, 2013, 10:28 AM
Jan 2013

Wallis is the youngest and Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest at 85. So we have a 2 in 5 chance of history really being made with one of them winning.
