(12,132 posts)lol...but in this case it's because I haven't read TGG and TCitR was so long ago I barely remember it other than knowing I enjoyed reading it.
If I had to pick a favorite from stuff I read as a teenager it would be either A Tale of Two Cities or something by Dashiell Hammet.

(5,909 posts)I'll have to go with Salinger though---when I read it as a sophomore in high school I loved it.
My english teacher who assigned it went on to become a best selling author. His name is Wally Lamb.

(8,217 posts)I'd go for Gatsby.
Some people enjoy Catcher in the Rye more, but I could not like the character.
I can understand somewhat his isolation and maybe even his point of view, but can't really agree with his actions. Ineffectual complaints of a whiner who lacks the conviction or fortitude to see things through.
Gatsby, I liked due to the historical context. Finding about the actual scam that they say a character in the book was part of.
Also, I am an idiot who can relate to becoming devoted to someone who is not worthy of such a pedestal, as I've done something similar.
I am also Male.
However, I'd still say my favorite novel is Genji Monogatori by Murasaki Shikibu which is probably tied with Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa.

(28,749 posts)There is a belief (in my family) that most men would answer one way, and women the other I'll hold out a bit until I share which is which.

(8,217 posts)Although some girls I know didn't like Catcher in the Rye, but they respected some girls who they thought were very intelligent who said that "Catcher" is their favorite book of all time.
Perhaps the difference is between the method of writing?
I always thought Catcher was more dealing with the emotional aspects of a character and their motivations.
Gatsby dealt more with the actions of individuals affected by strong emotions.
--Gatsby being in love goes through a remarkable transformation.
--The mistress running off to the road towards the car she thinks is her lover's.
--The husband of the mistress killing Gatsby due to blaming him for the death of his wife.
Then the callousness or perhaps lack of empathy of the two "aristocrats" who doesn't really get affected much by the three in the end.
Both books involve being put in to a society or class perceived to be above their own.
