(46,262 posts)Four years ago my lovely tabby tomcat Erin died of kidney failure, I cried off and on for days.
I have a real sweetie now, Charlotte, along with Lucky, my b/w kitty.
But Erin will always have a place in my heart.
Don't give in to despair, grieve, and maybe someday find a new buddy of a dog.
The new dog can't replace the one you lost, but it can help you feel better.

(5,946 posts)I have been there and felt that. With dogs I love (still) and with people I love, Hang in there.
When Sadie died, I worked through it by putting up an memorial web page with stories and pictures of her life and adventures.

(27,985 posts)and it's clear from the responses here, that you have a willing audience of fur baby friends here.
Soon, the numbness will come but it won't stay forever. It's mother natures way of buffering the pain of loss and it's okay to go there. This is one of the toughest roads we humans ever have to traverse. When the numbness goes, there will be so many emotions and talking or writing it out helps many people. If you are one of those, talk then, but only talk to fellow animal lovers. Some people who aren't animal people have this totally bizarre idea that losing a fur friend isn't that big a deal. I'm sure you know to discount anyone, even here, who comes up with that idea. It's clueless.

http://rainbowsbridge.com/poem.htm
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

(272 posts)I'm fairly new here, and I don't know who Buddy is (cat?), but I know the pain of losing a dear companion. It hurts, and there's nothing you can do about the pain, you just have to bear it. I hope you soon reach a place where you can think of him with happiness instead of sorrow, and until then I'll just say I'm so sorry you lost your baby. Terrible.

(30,947 posts)And I am sorry to read your post of Buddy's passing. I teared up as I am distressed to know about any beloved pet that has gone to doggie heaven. I have also lost 3 dogs in the past 10 years and each one's passing was heart-wrenching.
tavalon
(27,985 posts)A part of you is dying. Having a family member (and all of us who are dog companions know they are family) die at the right time is hard enough, having them ripped away in an accident is horrific beyond measure. I had that happen with, ironically, my dog Buddy, when I was eight and I saw him run under the car tire. I'm nearly 50 now and have been at the passing of many of my fur family but that one was hands down the hardest.
The only slightly comforting thing I can say is that Buddy had a hell of a human friend in you and I know it because that human friend is grieving something terrible right now.
Katie, you need to take care of Bob for a while now and kiss his tears away. And if Buddy was also your friend, it's okay to grieve, little furry girl.

(20,044 posts)Your local SPCA or Humane Society may have a pet loss support group. I went a few times after I lost my first cat at the ripe old age of 22. People bring pictures, talk, listen, cry. It really helps to be with others who are going through the same kind of grief.

(14,120 posts)My baby Maverick was killed by being ran over by a drunk driver that came straight into the yard. He was out there to use the doggy bathroom. The monster pulled out of the yard like a bat out of hell leaving my baby in pain and agony. I ran him to the animal hospital. Those people did everything they could. The vet was crying as he came out to tell us the bad news.
I am so sorry this happened to buddy. I really am!
Maverick with is cat brother. He was 1 1/2 at time of pic. He got a lot bigger.

(6,001 posts)Buddy was my baby.Walked Katie up to the pet park here at the complex and it killed me.LOVED taking buddy there. The little dogs thought he was the shit and loved him.The bigger dogs were terrified of him and kind of stayed in the corners out of his way.Was funny to watch dogs that you would normally consider badass putting their tails down and sitting quietly when the budster showed up.Funny part was he was a gentle giant and wouldn't hurt a flea.
