wrecks off one of the Islands. I recently found somebody who actually went there. Said it was humid which is bad for me. But I looked it up and there is a dry time of year. 60 minutes did a story on it in the 1980s, talked about how it was a mix of socialism and capitalism. I've wanted to go ever since.

(21,925 posts)When I was 12 years old, I caught the spelunking bug and I became obsessed with cave exploring. A few miles outside Colorado Springs there's Williams Canyon which contained a number of limestone caves. My friends and I explored a cave named Huccacove Cave which had a very interesting layout, on two levels with some drop offs and pits that made an impression on us 12 year olds exploring it by the light of carbide lamps without adult supervision. We felt like we were in the movie Journey To The Center Of The Earth or exploring the cave in Mark Twain's novel Tom Sawyer. This was in about 1961. Since that time, explorers from the National Speleological Society made major breakthroughs in the cave, finding new passages and increasing the known cave length about five times what it was before. I'd like to go back to that cave to see what they've found and see if the cave would still be as exciting to me now as it was when I was an adolescent.

(2,560 posts)In a post downstream, I talk about how we're going to Jordan in May. We're going via Paris as we can't get a direct flight from Amsterdam (we live in Holland). So, we're planning to stay in Paris for a week. I know, most people would weep upon hearing about our problem. (Background: promised the wife 20 years ago that I'd take her to Paris. i'm now actually going to do it. Plus, we get Jordan. Oh boy, big dent in the bank balance!!!!)
Any advice/website/hint would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

(1,259 posts)It's Vacation Rental By Owners. Basically the owners or their agents rent apartments to travelers. There are several sites like this. You typically pay half up front and they meet you with a key when you show up and pay the second half. I'm sure it's possible that they will cheat you out of your money, but I think if there were complaints against them they'd be kicked off the site. We've never had a problem and we've rented in about 8 different cities in the US and Europe.
Note- I'm not affiliated with them, just offering this type of suggestion.
SwissTony
(2,560 posts)I'll look into that site. We're going in May.
Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

(32,354 posts)And I'll share the best advice I ever got about visiting Paris with you: If you only have time to go to one museum, it ain't the Louvre you ought to consider---it's the Musee d'Orsay. If you've got a week, do them both, of course. Bon Voyage.

(2,560 posts)I used to go to my local library in Scotland as a seven year old. I often looked at books with photos of pyramids. A helpful librarian pulled out a book with pictures of Petra. I was hooked. We are going in May. I'll see Petra, Petra by night and little Petra.

(2,560 posts)It's about the size of the US in terms of area.
My advice: don't try and see too much if you only have a few weeks. You don't want to spend all your time travelling as opposed to admiring my wonderful country.
Hope you have a great trip.
we will probably try for a full month and my travel partner has been twice before.
probably northwest tropical area and the tablelands around Urulu - I am not a city person at all
when she was there (20 years ago?) they had rental camper/RV type vehicles. we are thinking about this as well.
SwissTony
(2,560 posts)Not bad choices at all. Two great areas.
Be aware of the time of year. If you're not used to tropical and extremely humid heat, avoid the Kimberley in the period Nov-Feb (The Wet). I lived in Darwin for six years and always joked that you tell the locals from the tourists by the fact that the locals walked in the sun, the tourists skipped from shade spot to shade spot. It's merciless if you're not used to it. Particularly during the wet. But even in the Dry, it's very hot.
I presume you'll be flying into Darwin. I don't think there are any direct international flights into Kununurra or Alice. Why don't you consider going to see Kakadu? 250 km from Darwin and more than worth the effort.
There's not a great deal to see in Darwin, but Litchfield's worth a visit.
I wouldn't drive a camper from Darwin-Kimberley-Alice Springs. They are all a long way apart. Better to hire one at each destination. Fly between the destinations.
When you get to Uluru, go out to the Olgas. They are magical. And I presume you'll be going to places like King's Canyon.
I hope you go and I wish both of you a fantastic journey.
Edited to add: take PLENTY of water
