(29,414 posts)that the majority of my music tastes are the "fault" of a local Liberal radio station, one of the five original Pacifica stations. My journey through their crazy dj talents began in 1977, and I ended up as one of them for a while.
Sure, I don't care for the majority of the popular music of the 60s and 70s, but I'd never take back what I was exposed to back then and since! If I had stuck with the standard (low quality) commercial stations, I'd never have heard Philip Glass' "Einstein on the Beach", P.D.Q. Bach, King Crimson, Be Bop Deluxe, Bill Bruford, Dev-O, Oingo Boingo, negativland, X T C, the genres of ska, acid jazz, fusion, progressive rock, or "art rock". I also never would have heard the brilliant radio theater creations from ZBS such as The Adventures of Jack Flanders, not to mention never hearing Firesign Theater on commercial stations
So, while you may recoil in utter horror at the examples I've playfully given, it all represents a fraction of the kind of musical spectrum I enjoy on a daily basis

(10,337 posts)I lost almost all interest in contemporary music with the advent of Disco. There are a few musicians that still appeal to me like Norah Jones, Diana Krull, etc. but now I mostly listen to classical and Flamenco. Flamenco! Now there is guitar art! Leona Boyd, The Spanish Album, may be the most incredible guitar I have ever heard. It sounds like five people are playing and it's just her! Really hard to believe that one persons fingers can move that fast!

(29,414 posts)if it hadn't been for public/community radio. I learned so much about the whole spectrum of music that way. And with the Internet, I have discovered that much more, such as this download site. The first album is Flamenco, just beware of their redirect ads. If you have a blocker, make sure it's working. (I use Opera and don't have a problem with the site.) I've gotten much of the Middle Eastern music I like from there, and then gone on to buy almost full catalogs of those artists I liked the most
The Meet-Up group I'm in locally for belly dance (as a fan of the art) also includes shows for Flamenco, and I've seen a few. There are some excellent dancers in Houston

(13,324 posts)I mean, sure there's a million old-school Jamaican artists I could've mentioned instead, but these guys were probably the best of the second-wave British bands.
Speaking of which, Tony Tribe - "Red Red Wine" (1969) :

And keep posting stuff as you remember it. Ska is one of those genres I could truly lose myself in, even if my collection is minimal.

(39,771 posts)Ska sucks.
Ska revival isn't cool, you stupid fuck.
The bands are only in it for the bucks.
And if you don't believe me you're a schmuck.
But the trend will die out with any luck.
