Like most people, there are many musical artists I don't like. I am not really "into" music the way most people are, I never just sit and listen and enjoy, and I don't really have any one style preferrence. I like a bit of everything. I like modern hip hop, techno, screamo, emo and Dubstep. I love Led Zep, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, and all that. I like some country artists like Alan Jackson and Travis Tritt and so on. I think Leonard Cohen is a genious and Neil Young a god. I enjoy Japanese rock and modern K-pop music like Brown Eyed Girls. I even enjoy a great deal of classical music. Like I said, I like a bit of everything. Have a puppy:

There are also quite a few HUGE bands that I do not enjoy.
For example, I would rather punch myself in the testicles than listen to U2 singing anything. I think Queen had a few great songs but most of their music does nothing for me. I think Nirvana basically sucked and if Cobain hadn't died no one would mention them today. But that's personal, I understand WHY people love U2 and Queen, I recognize their talent, it's just not for me. I get that. I understand completely why their fans love them. Also, another puppy:

Then there's Bruce Springsteen.
And I simply do not understand what ANYONE sees in this guy. His songs are rubish, his voice is mediocre at best, he's not a particularly talented guitarist, his lyrics are weak, and his sound is muddy. I cannot imagine his band getting a job at a local tavern working for tips, let alone attracting any kind of following.
He is literally the only act I can think of where I simply do not get it. I cannot imagine how anyone likes him at all.
What am I missing? Help me DU Lounge, you're my only hope! Finally here's another PUPPY!!!

(19,145 posts)I liked him when I was young. "Born to Run" was a perfect anthem for my situation.
Then, I decided I was too sophisticated or something, and I didn't 'get' his music, so I stopped listening, for a couple decades.
I got reacquainted with him in 2004 when he toured for Kerry. I started listening again and realized I really like a lot of his stuff - and now the lyrics resonate with me more, since I've seen a bit more of the world.
I guess it's mostly a matter of taste, but there's also this: Springsteen and his band are intensely professional who care about their craft and put immense energy into it. I love to watch Weinberg on the drums. He's so cool and focused. Look at Springsteen (who turned 60 in 2009) and then at Jagger or some of the other supposedly cooler musicians. Springsteen has obviously taken care of himself and not gotten into too much of the drugs bullshit. (I cannot emphasize enough how much I dislike Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger and their ilk, btw. Not that you mentioned them either.)
Also, he's tried different musical approaches through the years, so all his stuff doesn't sound the same. It's interesting.
I don't like everything he does. But I respect the body of work he's built through his career and the integrity with which he treats the profession.
And, there's not too many better ways to spend the morning commute than with "No Surrender" blasting.

Yes, I actually said that and believe it. And it's also why I won't listen to his music. Same for anyone else with a gravelly-type and/or overly nasal voice (Rod Stewart comes to mind...)

(7,515 posts)If I had to choose only one type of music, it would be classical. One of the things I love about 'teh lounge' is the constant introduction of new music to my old ears. I just discovered Bond the other day when sheshe2 posted Victory... I kept it playing on another tab for hours!

(6,234 posts)I mean WAY into it. It seems just about everyone I know is into music to some degree, but this guy was serious and he wanted to share his love. His thing was METAL, which I am fine with, but obscure sub-genres that he could (and did) go on about for hours.
He was constantly sending me links to music, and then telling me about it. He'd throw out labels like "Scandanavian Norse Techno Metal" or "Germanic Viking Turbo Goth" along with youtube vids a dozen at a time. So I would share with him the music of my people, things like this:
Speaking of which, I think that's a better song than pretty much anything "The Boss" has done. But there you go.

(17,621 posts)He 's a wonderful songwriter whose music reflects his gritty working class roots. He and his band don't rely on silly costumes, lighting tricks, or other gimmicks; they just go out on stage and perform. He's well into his sixties and still going strong, so he must be doing something right. That doesn't mean his music is for everyone, though.

Really good music requires that one sit and listen carefully to it. I am also someone who likes many musical styles, and can say that most rock doesn't require careful listening, either.
I'm not saying that Springsteen is a great musical artist. He does have some great songs. I like some of his stuff, but would not count myself as a big fan. I see him mostly as writing original material in a style that harks back to an earlier era, a 50s sound.
He is dedicated to his audience, has a great band, puts on really long shows.
I like this song a lot:

(23,340 posts)It took me a really long time to like that song. Years. It has a very complex song, and didn't appeal to me at first.
What would be more helpful in this discussion is this: Can you point to a song you really like, and say why you like it?
Here is another great one

(6,234 posts)Composed by Yoshiki (on the piano). This is a complicated piece of music that, to me, evokes an entire range of emotions from longing to triumph. It ranges from heartbreakingly beautiful to dramatic, and throughout it teases, leaving the listener wanting more.
From the 1982 Tony Awards. Jennifer Holliday puts on one of the most powerful performances ever captured on film. This is singing on a preternatural level. Note, watch it all the way to the end. No lip synching, no auto tune, pure live perfection.
Terry Reid (the guy originally tapped as the lead singer for Led Zep) still amazing after all these these years. This is a sad and beautiful song.
kwassa
(23,340 posts)The Jennifer Holliday piece I am slightly familiar with, and I have never seen the other two.( I did see Led Zeppelin in 1969 but Robert Plant was singing lead.)
I like lots of soul singers and gospel.
Honestly, the Yoshiki piece was a little overwrought for my taste. It is a bit like some of the more romantic classical composers that I have less interest than other classical music.
I do think we have different taste in music. My eclecticism heads offshore, where I listen to more Irish, Latin, Caribbean, and African styles of music, as well as classical, jazz of all eras, zydeco, funk, R&B, some folk, rock, and blues here at home.

(2,560 posts)I love the fact that some people see great things in one artist while the same artist leaves others cold.
I like a few of Bruce's tracks. I don't like Dylan as a singer but love him as a songwriter.
A friend once asked me how I could love Tom Waits and opera at the same time. I said "Tom helps me appreciate opera. Opera helps me appreciate Tom".

(57,740 posts)His music is working class rock. He celebrates an America where people could earn a decent wage from working hard and laments its passage. He's also a solid Dem.
He's had a long career and a lot of people love him. I listened to him a lot when I was younger but not in many years. Still, I can appreciate his role in American rock and our broader culture.

Now, few decades later I canenjoy his music.
Here are some other people singing his songs:
