(9,077 posts)Bourbon Street smelled like stale beer every morning, not unlike a closed up bar.
Some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen were dudes.
I didn't live there though, just worked there.

(42,770 posts)unless you think drinking is a sin? But, since I am Catholic...
What New Orleans is is a total live and let live place. No one cares what you do. It is so freeing. Especially when I go up
to CT and there are police on the beach checking your cooler for alcohol (call it Nazi beach).
I suppose when you witness 1200 people washed out to sea, the little bullshit things don't matter at all.

(42,770 posts)I had three apts...Royal and St Phillips, Chartres and Gov Nichols, and St Ann and Burgundy.
Were you there when the Saints won the super bowl ? Most amazing night ever
Did you go to Verti Mart for food? Dog park?
I did a couple of assignments for Whitney Bank and Cap One. You?
Oh, how about Cosomo's on Gov Nichols? cool bar and they let dogs in

I was on the 800 block of Barracks, catey-corner to the dogpark.
I was a civilian contractor for FEMA. Mostly hung out at the R Bar in the Marigny, which was also dog friendly. Heck, most of the bars in the Quarter were.
I boycotted the Saints Superbowl win, although I was pleased for the city. Patriots fan.

Yes, I understand, huge Giants fan..but it was impossible to not get caught up in the Saints thing. Our office was decorated with player pictures and even had a Merry Breesmus Christmas tree. Once a week you had to wear their colors. The night they won, except for Obama's first inauguration, I have never seen so many people all happy at once. But, the crowds kept me up until 4:30am and if I had heard another "Who Dat" thought I would scream. It didn't keep you up?
Never made it to R Bar, but my friend loved it there. My fav was an Irish pub - Fahy's on Dauphine and Toulouse. There were 80 of us from all over the country so always fun. Not sure if I'd like it there by myself. But loved the lower Quarter where you and I lived..early in the morning, walking dogs, people watering the balcony plants, going out for coffee.
I miss it terribly. Wish I could afford a small apt there. But anything decent starts at $450k for 600 sf.
Did you buy any of those anti-FEMA T-shirts ...saw them everywhere.

(17,437 posts)Mornings in the Quarter were great. I walked Cleo down to the coffee shop at the bottom of Barracks and got my fuel for the morning, then took her back home and headed off to the West Bank for work. (Coming home always sucked - it could take hours some days.)
My house was on the market for $650k. They finally sold it after I was "demobilized". The owner had bought it for her parents after some writing success in the 70's, which is when it had been last remodeled. It was tres funky, with orange wall paper in the bathrooms, and state of the art 1972 kitchen appliances (except the fridge - nobody had an old fridge post Katrina). Her parents both passed away before they ever returned to New Orleans. My coworker rented it for a month, had to give it up, and I took it over, so it had only been occupied for one month post Katrina when I moved in the Spring of '08. Fully furnished, clothes in drawers, food in pantry, books in Library, booze in the bar. It was spooky. Katrina tales.

I came back to FEMA for another few months in 2011 and found a place in the Bywater. Walked by the old house once just after it sold and they were busy remodeling it. I bet it is stunning now.
I picked up a "Fixed Everything My Ass" t shirt before I left town.

(42,770 posts)So funny about the West Bank traffic. Coming home to the quarter everyday from west new orleans, we would always say.."who in their right mind would live/work over there." When I first got there, I would screw up and end up going over that bridge by mistake and then have to turn around. I remember one time, didn't have any cash at all - like 13 cents - and had to pay the toll. I pulled up and the guy said, "No, money? Ah, don't worry about it ! Go on." Only in nola.
Guess we've highjacked this thread enough, huh. It was cool to meet someone here who did the same kind of thing I did !
Going down in April for the Women's NCAA Final Four....gonna look at some apts for sale. I'll PM you !

(17,437 posts)Those were taken after I moved out and the owner had the house cleaned out finally and repainted. The only pics I ever took in the house were of Cleo.
The Parlor used to have red walls, which I liked. Here is Cleo in one of the two ratty comfy chairs where we spent most of our time.

One day I was sitting there watching TV with Cleo and a rat ran out of the fireplace, crossed the floor right in front of us, and disappeared into the kitchen! The fireplaces had been converted from coal to gas ages ago, and the rats were coming in through openings around the gas pipes from under the house.
I closed those up that day, and eventually killed three rats in the house.
You can still see where they were nesting in the roof in those realtor photos - Fr. 11 above the table.
Have a good time at the tournament!

(56,108 posts)We were just outside of the French Quarter, but both of us worked at a gay bar on Bourbon for awhile. There is lots of "sin" depending on one's definition; the food is certainly sinful.
