But ya gotta pay for that in a monster like that.

(10,337 posts)Truck bed carrying capacity, not vehicle weight.
bike man
(620 posts)<snip>The "half-ton" description loosely refers to the truck's payload capacity. This means that the truck can carry up to 1000 pounds (453.5 kg) of cargo and passengers in the cab and bed. But wait a minute: If you take a look at the stats on modern half-ton pickups, you'll notice that their payload capacities exceed 1000 pounds (453.5 kg). Although early half-ton pickups could carry max loads of 1000 pounds (453.5 kg), since at least the 1960s, new and improved half-ton pickups have been able to safely carry more, surpassing their namesakes [source: Autotropolis].
But old habits die hard, and the name "half-ton" has stuck around to this day. It's still helpful as a general classification term, differentiating the group from the larger, heavy-duty three-quarter-ton pickups and one-ton pickups (also obsolete terms). A better way to find out the maximum payload capacity is to check the individual truck's specs online or in the owner's manual to see what the manufacturer recommends <more at link>
Note that this article is sorta old.

DEFINITELY not vehicle weight, - mine is 5,000 pounds empty.
That's 2-1/2 tons.
I've put 2 tons in the box on mine,
I had to drive SO slow because the front wheels were barely on the ground, and steering was dicey
Anyone that has never overloaded their 1/2 ton isn't getting max usage out of it imo

So I was driving this Crown Vic one shift, and it sure felt like it had some ponies under the hood - I stomped on it when I was on the highway(no passengers) and the damm thing burned rubber going from 1st into second at 70 miles an hour!
I'm a mechanic, and curiosity got the better of me so pulled off the road and popped the hood.
It was a twin-overhead cam monster V-8 fuel injected.
Overhead cam V-8's are rare in a normal passenger vehicle

(20,384 posts)Came pretty close to meeting my maker that day. Friend's boat and we were just going to putt over to the ramp and take her out for the night and of course neither of us had life vest or helmets on As it happens, Lake Berryessa can get really calm just at dusk, so my buddy said "let's open her up a little" and punched it. We were doing fine for a while, and based on conditions, RPM, and the prop pitch he later estimated we were doing over 150mph. All of a sudden there was a shudder and the boat lurched causing the left sponson to lift. At this point air rushed under the hull and lifted us out of the water with the bow continuing to rise. If you've ever seen a drag boat wreck video, we were right in the middle of one, and usually the next sequence of events is that boat goes vertical and the transom goes forward essentially doing a backflip, or the transom hits the water and the resulting drag causes the hull to slam down in the water and disintegrates. Well, as luck would have it we did not flip, and just as the boat was starting to touch back down my buddy punched the throttle for in instant at the perfect moment with the result being that instead of the hull slamming back down into the water we kind of skipped like a stone. Still it was a rough landing, and when we finally pulled the boat out we found the hull cracked from the tip of the left sponson all the way back to the transom and the deck area of the bow was completely stress fractured.
Spent a lot of time on the water before and after that event, but no more drag boats for me.

"Jet-boats" was another name applied to these race boats that had one OR TWO V-8 engines in them.
I never had no interest in riding in or driving one - but they pulled thousands to the coast to watch their races.
I'll stick to the watching part with that kind of speed on water -
ever see what happens when one flips at 150 mph?

ConcernedCanuk
(13,509 posts).
.

I actually had a cable kit that went from the engine to the frame on the driver's(torque) side.
It was to prevent the engine from jumping way up when the motor mount gave out.
Biggest problem, without that cable restraint - when the mount went on that side - the engine would raise up high enough that it pulled the throttle linkage so the engine was basically floored!
Car would take off, and the brakes weren't good enough back then to stall the car so the only way if it was severe enough to stop the car was shut off the ignition.
Scary!
MindPilot
(12,693 posts)and this Impala come flying down the road, turns into the gas station and up and over a pile of dirt dug out while the tanks were being replaced. Fortunately the pile of dirt stopped the car and lifted the still spinning rear wheels off the ground.
The poor elderly woman driving was paralyzed with fear. We all ran out with fire extinguishers and first aid kits, got the car shut off and helped the woman who was uninjured but badly shaken get inside.
It was the absolute wort-case scenario. When the engine raised up, it not only hyper-extends the throttle cable, pulling the throttle wide open, it jams the transmission linkage so you can't shift out of drive. It tears loose the vacuum line to the brake booster, so you lose power brakes, and kinks the power steering hose so you lose power steering.
At least the fuel lines are on the other side so the failure generally didn't start a fire.

In the back seat, in the middle was a speaker and a balance setting to simulate stereo.
I replaced the speaker 2 or three times, complaining to the stereo shop that their speakers were crap.
I was wrong
They replaced it twice, free
But around the third time the guy came out to let me show him where and how I put the speaker in.
He started laughing when he saw it was a convertible - then explained.
With the top down, going the speeds I liked to drive, the wind coming over the windshield literally blew the cone right out of the speaker!

130mph,

Only did the 130 once,

(11,064 posts)At around 140, the experience became more interesting when the entire car started to shake.
After topping it out when the car wouldn't go any faster, and slowing to a normal speed, the left rear tire disintegrated. This put the car in an uncontrollable spin which ended up ruining the rear axle. Thanks to Ford engineering who built the car on a combination X and box frame, the rest of the car was fine. It turned out that the Firestone 500 steel -belted radials had a design flaw. Firestone recalled them and settled a number of lawsuits including mine.
MindPilot
(12,693 posts)I worked at a shop that sold Firestone tires. And then later as a NVH (Noise Vibration & Harshness)tech for Ford. Those Steel-Belted 500s had so many problems. Half of them you knew there was a problem before you even put the wheel on the car. As you tried to balance; spin up the wheel and the readings would keep changing. Move weights around all day and never get one of those tires to spin though a full range of speeds without vibrating. Of course from management's perspective it was never the tire's fault.
I swear Firestone tires were the most frustrating part of my automotive career.
AnotherMcIntosh
(11,064 posts)I wonder what happened. Firestone charged premium prices for the 500s. They weren't cheap.

The trailer we were pulling was not necessarily in contact with the pavement at all times, I think. I backed off when the Major woke up going over a bump and gave me "the look".
Two days later the Major was with his regular driver (I was filling in) and they rolled that same jeep in a convoy due to a frozen wheel bearing. They were okay, broken collar bone, iirc.

(4,851 posts)I was driving my Honda Accord LX 5 speed, I think it was a 1986. I have no idea if I was actually going 130, faster or slower, but the speedometer went up to 130 and I pinned it and held it for about 30 - 45 seconds. If you know Montana, I was on 12, which connects I-15 at Helena Airport and I-90. Back in the late 80s, it was mostly a 2 lane highway that I could drive in the middle of the day for the entire 45 mile length seeing maybe half a dozen other cars. We had a family friend who lived in Helena, and I spent a few weeks each summer out there in high school. When I was 18, I was dumb. There were a few spots where you knew the cops were watching for reckless driving, but there was no speed limit, just drive "reasonable and proper" under the road conditions. So on a clear day the cops would not pull you over for going up to 80. My Ford Taurus my uncle had back then only went up to 85 on the speedometer, so we drove the whole length with it pinned, slowing up to 80 or so for those stretches at the peaks and curves where we knew cops were. I never knew how fast I got. Once my cousin got the Honda, one time I decided to pin it at the 130 that the speedometer read. I honestly never did it again because it felt very unsafe. I felt the tires had poor contact with the road and the car was catching more updraft than I felt safe with. But I was young and stupid and did it one time. I always say that I drove 130 mph, but I have no idea if I was actually driving that fast or maybe faster/slower. Who knows how accurate that speedometer was at that speed. I would never do that again unless I was in a racecar designed to keep on the road at such speeds.

(1,353 posts)and an owner's nightmare, too. Parts are hard to find, as they didn't make that many of them that year, less than 350. It needs double platinum spark plugs...$18 apiece. It eats premium gas, but actually I get 25 mpg unless I jump on it a lot, which I tend to do, 'cuz it's fun. It costs at least $500 for a damn tune-up. I had to have the cams welded, due to a manufacturing defect that can cause the cams to spin out, which would wreck the engine.
But I love it anyway. Right now it's in the shop with the engine pulled, so the trans can be re-built.

(34,189 posts)In a 1968 Buick Skylark through the middle of the Green Swamp north of Lakeland, Florida. Most of that road is straight as a laser beam except one little boggle to the west at the Polk County line just as it goes over a small bridge. I don't know if it was the little swerve, the little rise at the bridge, or if some hunter left a shotgun shell on the asphalt that made the tire go.
It was lots of fun controlling the car and keeping it from running off the side. There were only narrow margins on the sides of the road with ditches and swamp outside those. Once I was at a stop, it took a good hour for the tire to cool off enough for me to change it - though I needed part of that to stop shaking.
I haven't driven over 100 mph since. When I was bringing my 1999 Suburban home from buying it, I accidentally got up to 85-90. It was just such a smooth ride, I didn't notice how fast I was going and the music I was playing was not conducive to driving sedately. After that, I put it on cruise control on the speedy sections of 19/98 between Brooksville and Perry.

(34,189 posts)Like many of the muscle cars.
I drove my poor Skylark to death - I really needed a truck, not a road car. When I got it, I asked Dad what I needed to do to maintain it. He mentioned nothing about oil. Once I ran out of gas, oil and water at the same time. I used it to scope out places to go horseback riding in the National Forest, forged streams with it, did a lot of sand road driving, and I'd take it out on the highway and top it out.
When I finally limped home from college one weekend, there was some compression in three of the eight cylinders. I'd destroyed the engine, broken the suspension, and trashed the interior. The body wasn't beat up but it had that bad silver paint job that just couldn't stand up to Florida sun and the paint was peeling off.
My next car was a Datsun station wagon with a 4 cylinder engine. Much more useful for carrying hay and horse feed, even came in handy to bring the goat to the SCA event for the feast. I still should have had a truck.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,876 posts)This truck;

East bound on I 80 in Nevada, about 10 miles from the Utah line. There is a long straight stretch that gently crosses a wide valley, with about a 2% downhill grade as you enter the West side of the valley. I had been on the CB all the way across the state so I knew there were no cops around. I had a stopwatch that you set lap distances on in order to get average speed for a lap. I set it for a mile and as the tach climbed above 1900 (the speedo only went to 80 and I was long past that) I started the watch as a mile post went by. Just a tick over 33 seconds later the next mile marker went by and the truck was still accelerating. Average just over 107. I reckon I was doing about 109 when I went by the second MM. Still had another 250 RPM's to go, so I figured the truck would run about 112. 3.55:1 rears, 13 speed, highly modified Series 60 that was putting out about 500 HP at the time.
That was the last trip with that truck, and I was able to spec out its replacement.
This one;

That Freightliner was geared to run much faster - 3.11:1 rears, 13 speed, 2300 limit on the RPM's. 600 HP Series 60 Detroit. Never got it over about 90 though. But it would do 90 all day long without breathing hard.
The problem isn't going that fast if the truck will run it, the problem is finding tires that will handle the speed reliably. They don't exist! Driving a semi over 100 MPH is taking your life in your hands. Truck tires are designed to carry weight, not speed. There is no such thing as a "Z" rated truck tire!
I had a 1992 Vette and got it up to about 125. Scared the hell out of me.
I have been a passenger in a Ferrari 348 driven by Raul Boesel. He got that up to about 150 or so on the backstretch at West Palm Beach International raceway.

(16,191 posts)At 2AM, on I-5 along a long, straight stretch somewhere north of Bakersfield.
Old friend had just made a good chunk of change selling some patents (and I mean good) and decided to buy himself his dream car. The car he wanted was sitting in a dealership in L.A., and they offered to ship if up for him, but we thought it would be more fun to fly down and drive it back ourselves. We were right
The funniest part about it is that he ended up hating the car, and sold it only about a year later. It had the suspension of a skateboard and practically required a dedicated mechanic, but that damned thing was fast. The problem was, outside of that one trip, and a couple of paid track days when he got to run it at Laguna Seca and Sears Point, there was never really any point to having that kind of power. It was tons of trouble, and not much fun.
He drives a Subaru WRX today. Not as fast, but loads of fun and way cheaper.

Unfortunately,
I had a few friends that weren't
Three of them died hitting a rock-cut at over 100mph back in the late 60's
I had some close calls, rolled 2 vehicles at speed, and hit a telephone pole dead on at 50mph on a backroad in the early 90's
never drove and drank since that on

Sure doesn't look like there is enough room "under the hood" in front of the driver for an engine of any kind . .
Gotta be a rear engine methinks . . .
triguy46
(6,028 posts)1.9 liter, 4 cyl ford fiesta engines and drive trains. Rear engine, 5 speed. The rules require engines to be sealed and can only be refurbed by specified SCCA shops. You don't get the same engine back, you swap them for a refurb. Generally last a year and still be competitive. 1600 pounds minimum weight with driver. The way they are geared, (again sealed, no gear set changing), top speed is 135. You can buy a new one as a kit, but most are built up by an authorized shop. Details:
Tube Frame Chassis
Suspension: front/rear rocker arm, coil-over shock/spring, lower "A" arm, dual externally adjustable anti-roll bars
Ford 1.9L fuel-injected, water-cooled, SOHC 8-valve, hemispherical head, inline 4-cylinder derived from Ford Escort, sealed by SCCA Enterprises
ECU: Ford Motorcraft, modified for racing, sealed by SCCA Enterprises
Ford 5-speed manual transmission, sealed by SCCA Enterprises
Goodyear Eagle Racing tires (bias-ply, same size on all four corners of car) spec tire, Goodyear Eagle Racing deep-groove rain tire also available
Custom exhaust
Wheels: spec 13-inch alloy, can also run spec stamped steel wheels
Brake Pads: Hawk (spec pads)
Cockpit Adjustable Brake Bias (Tilton)
Penske Racing or Koni (original) shock absorbers (single adjustable, rebound only) sealed by SCCA Enterprises
92 in (2,337 mm) wheelbase
1,670 lb (757 kg). including driver
3-piece fiberglass body
Instruments: tachometer, oil pressure, water temperature, alternator warning light
105 hp (+/- approx. 3 hp)
Fuel Capacity: 7.75 US gal (29 L; 6 imp gal) ATL Fuel Cell
Fuel: commercial pump fuel only, usually 93 to 100 octane
135 mph (217 km/h) top speed

I'm a licenced mechanic, mostly retired now, but I don't think I've seen anything but radials for decades!
I have never worked on any race cars, so I have really no idea what they use for tires.
triguy46
(6,028 posts)Its a spec tire, the only option you have is new ones. They are striving for car equality, with the emphasis on driving. I can't answer for their choices, and I no longer race. It was a blast and reasonably affordable.

(1,569 posts)I ran out of road and courage before I could see if it would get to 120. I pegged my 70 Javelin (360 ci) at 120 but it took a while to get there and I kept thinking the tires just weren't up to it, shut it down pretty quick. Loved that car, but AMC just didn't have the engineering chops to make a pony car that held together.

nice car, lots of snot, dunno why it didn't catch on
Was a good looking car too,
maybe the Pacer and the Gremlin sucked their funds dry . . .
Spike89
(1,569 posts)I blew a head gasket on my Javelin and discovered just how flawed when I did the replacement myself. Most engines have 4-6 head bolts per side--I think the Javelin had 12. Worse, the specs called for them to be tightened to a socket-busting 120 lbs. For comaprison, the closest I could find in Chilton at the time was a Caddie engine requiring 90, and it had 1/2 as many bolts!
All that was on a stock engine. I really liked that Javelin, but in a nutshell, AMC just didn't have the engineering or race experience to compete with Ford, Chevy, and Dodge in the muscle car arena. I am not a car guy really, the other AMC engines might have been great, but I know from talking to other Javelin owners, the cars were hard to keep on the road.
ConcernedCanuk

maybe that is why AMC is no more . .
Spike89
(1,569 posts)They did have some great ideas, they were into small cars early and the Javelin was a great concept. They just couldn't compete with the big boys of the day. In some ways, they tried to be a full-line auto manufacturer and might have had a chance if they just concentrated on affordable small cars or put everything into their pony car experiment or other niche.

Frankly, I am getting tire of beating my head against the wall and am looking to relocate. Have even thought of immigration to Canada but I am a bit too old for Canada's liking. Between all the Bush years and Perry, I have had it. I am tired of the mean spirit. It is one thing to be tough to survive, but it is another to put up with meanness against the defenseless. (15,399 posts)Sunday night coming home from a Driebergen SCA event with the household's goods packed in the back of my li'l 4-banger Ranger. This was before cell phones - or someone would have contacted my shotgun rider to let me know we were going just a wee bit too fast for the rest of the household traveling with us to keep up after the first grade. And lucky for me, the border checkpoint wasn't open, or someone may have noticed me before we got through Rainbow Valley.
No rattle, no whining - that was a good little truck. It wasn't until I started slowing down into a curve just before Escondido and glanced at the speedometer coming down off the peg that I realized how fast I was going.
Nothing like a long, straight freeway and knowing you'll have to get up to do a full day's work in the shipyards in about five hours to make that foot get heavy as lead... (my shotgun was going to drop me off and take the Ranger the next day to unload and I was going to take the carpool, so it was just a matter of getting home in time for sleep...)
Probably got home about half an hour/40 minutes sooner than it usually took.
