If you post McD's, Burger King, or other shit in a take-out bag fast food place I'm going to get nasty.
Me? Fuck, I don't know. Some non-chain place.

(156,595 posts)My husband has some favorites, and even though they're not on the menu anymore, he can still order them.
We go all the time, and they see us as family.
I've had their steak salad, and thought it was pretty good. Your mileage may vary, however!

(24,009 posts)on the other side of DC... if I get over that way... Indian is my favorite!! Yum
LiberalEsto
(22,845 posts)The other one is Madras Palace, which is all-vegetarian. My husband works with a lot of Indians and they say Madras Palace is one of the best in the area.
We've also run across some of his co-workers at Saagar. We love the buffet because they constantly offer different dishes, and you get the opportunity to sample whatever interests you. Saagar's lemon rice today was amazing.
Saagar is on Quince Orchard Road at Firstfield Road, behind the drive-in Starbucks.
If you go a little bit further east on Firstfield Road and turn right after Einstein Bagels, you will come in to Diamond Square shopping center. Madras Palace will be immediately on your left.
Enjoy!

Their sandwich menu is truly astonishing - over 200 sandwiches.
Last summer they had jazz on Sunday evenings but I'm not sure if they do during the winter.
HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)Do they still have the Bender Schmender (or something like that) - something like a 7 layer "sandwich" that's enough food for five or six people (maybe more). They advertised it by saying if you ate the entire thing (alone) they'd bring you another one for free.

The Columbia outpost closed back in the 1980's I believe.
Roy's came close to closing last April when they couldn't make Mortgage payments. However, they worked something out....

There is a restaurant thread in the Maryland Group, if you want to add to it!
HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)I don't think there are any JITBs this side of the Rockies anymore. There was a time when Columbia was FILLED with small restaurants. Every village had at least one, usually more. It all looks the same now, same with Reston. Just the same shit, different road. Reston is particularly bad. Other than one Trader Joe's and a Fresh Fields, the only grocery stores are either Giants or Safeways. All of the gas stations are either Exxon or Sunoco. With few exceptions, all of the restaurants are chains (although I have to admit I miss Ledo's).
Step outside to Herndon and the entire world changes. Last I heard, Tortilla Factory was still doing quite well.

(47,675 posts)It reminds me of a place we got pizza from when I was a kid (take out mind you - NOBODY delivered back then) called "Fat Man's" on Georgia Avenue, not far from Wheaton Elementary (at the 198 intersection) and almost directly across from Wheaton Regional Park. I have no idea if it is still there or not, but it was damn close to what Ledo's makes. Actually, I doubt the elementary is still there. It was old when I went to kindergarten there.
LiberalEsto
(22,845 posts)We who grew up in or around NYC regard Ledo's as the Olive Garden of pizza.
There is, however, real New Jersey pizza to be had in Gaithersburg, MD.
The place is called Slice of Olde Towne. It's located on Diamond Avenue, not too far from Roy's Place but on the opposite side of the street.
When we first tried them we thought we'd gone to pizza heaven. Or New Jersey.

HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)True, it is n.e., but Montgomery Village Ave. does have a major intersection with 355.
Since you're familiar with the area, Mont. Village Jr. High's band was invited to join Gathersburg's band in the stands for the homecoming game (77 or 78, forget which year). Just as they were crowning Gaithersburg's homecoming queen, a group of Seneca Valley guys ran across the field with a huge banner that said, "The only GOOD Trojan is a USED Trojan!!!"
The homecoming queen burst into tears and a small army of Gathersburg guys chased the S.V. guys back to their side and were met by another army of guys from S.V. on that side. "Higgledy-piggledy" is a fairly good description of what transpired after that.
On Edit: I was in the Jr. High band at the time.

(12,132 posts)for lunch on Friday. Had delicious Penang curry with chicken and saffron rice. The waitress laughed at me for ordering "american" hot. Thai hot kills me. It was all in good fun though so I don't mind her laughing. We eat lunch there pretty regularly. One of my co-workers always gets Thai hot and he powers through it but it sure looks like a strain from where I'm sitting. He gets the sweats. lol.

(12,132 posts)One of my first jobs was at a BBQ place in Duncanville, TX. It's still there but under new ownership and when I was in Texas 2 years ago I stopped in to see what was up and was happy to find 30something years later they were still using the same pits out back and the same kind of mesquite wood and the same Mrs Baird's white bread on the side. Tasted just like I remembered. Here in Florida all they wanna do is bbq a pig. Which is fine but Beef Brisket will always be "real BBQ" to me. lol.
There's a fella in Orlando who is from Ft Worth and he does a pretty good brisket at his restaurant but not as good as Micky Webb used to.

The corn cakes were a surprise for me too - I thought it would be something akin to cornbread but it was more like pancakes and even came with syrup (that I think they squeezed out of a maple tree that morning - seriously the best syrup I've ever had)...and now I understand why there are places that serve chicken and waffles - that fried chicken and those corn cakes with syrup have given me happy dreams just thinking about them lol....
but it would probably kill me earlier if I ate there a lot - good thing it's a 2 hour drive lol!

(18,497 posts)Spent the day in Savannah/Tybee. Church at the UU Savannah, first time I had been there in ages. But I told bf about it and he was intrigued.
After that we went towards Tybee spent some time at Fort Pulaski. Then to get to your answer we went to The Crab Shack http://www.thecrabshack.com/ on Tybee Island looking for calamari. They didn't have any but we had some wonderful crab stew.
Then we went to the Tybee Island pier. Came back to Savannah. Happened to spot the Occupy Savannah group. Made bf circle the block so I could get out and hug and thank them.
Then we had our dinner at Carlito's http://carlitosmexicanbarandgrill.com/ in Savannah. Which is probably one of my favorite Mexican places ever. And we had a Groupon for it that I had bought over a month ago so it "felt" almost free.
