Let's give kudos to Skinner and his fellow wizards -
Over 200,000 people will be sad if ever this place disappears.
Don't remember how many were here when I joined back around 2002.
I'm pretty sure it was way under 100k.
Anyone got stats on year/membership sorta thing?
yup
it's my insatiable curiosity thing again.

I've been in some forums that display how many are "in" the room, as well as "guests".
If DU has this function, I don't know about it.
Go to the main page, "home" and you will see we are approaching 203,000 members.
Members are members - no "given time" about that!

(9,077 posts)remember to deduct the tombstoned/PPRed members & those no longer active for whatever reason & the number of actual active users is much much lower. I have no way to estimate active members so I don't even want to venture a guess.

I'll post another thread when the numbers creep closer to the 203,000 mark!
I'm sure Skinner won't mind.

(10,237 posts)On UNN we had live chat times that gave us a count but I think it has to be done in live chat format .

(8,550 posts)... you can determine how many registrations there are per year (or any other time period). The following profiles are the first member registrations of the past five years:
2009: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=profile&uid=234661
2010: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=profile&uid=252398
2011: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=profile&uid=266266
2012: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=profile&uid=279534
2013: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=profile&uid=298825
And the most recent registration was:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=profile&uid=302940
Just subtract the ID numbers - so far this year (from 1/1/13) there have been 4116 registrations. During 2012 there were 19291, during 2011 there were 13268, for 2010 there were 13868, and 17737 in 2009, etc., etc.
Of course that only tells how many people registered, not how many are still around and posting.

ID numbers did not start at 0.
Secondly, if you bookmark a member, and they change their username -
go back to the bookmark and
Hello! - same membership # - new username.
Also, if you do a search on previous posts from years way back on a certain member - you will be surprised how many have changed their usernames.
Because you may well be looking at a new username
ponder that
hafta say though, in ten years, only discovered 3 - totally by accident.
But I wasn't checking.
A dedicated search would find much more methinks.

(14,400 posts)how many are active just as a curiosity.
If you ever do a search on a partial username there are a ton of zero and one post posters going all the way back that I think are still counted in the total.

Myself, I did not participate right off the bat, looked around to see what interested me.
didn't take me long, but many others take their time,
and some others forget they even logged in!
Fact is - I KNOW DU is busier than it was ten years ago -
all the extra forums and groups added would never have happened if Skinner and his wizards hadn't seen increased traffic, and donations.
I wonder if I'll live long enough to see DU hit half a million registrations.
THAT would be cool!
500,000

(10,602 posts)Hi,
Love love love this place. I've been a member for a long time but don't post all that much. It was a revelation to find a place that I fit in well and that is so cleanly organized and has all these little nooks and crannies to find.
Peace

I wonder if we will get know who the newbie is?
As Newyawker woulda said, it's a "milestone"
Skinner, maybe give the 203,000 person a star?
That might put a bit of a rush on???
Every 1k register gets a free star.
Ponder it.
