My son just got a job offer that he's 99.9% sure he's accepting. My mother was born there, but that was like a hundred years ago.
My stomach feels gross. I just get him back in the US and now he's skipping the state and moving offta nowhere. Poopiness.
I'm not really looking for stats, just general DU opinions 'cause you guys know pretty much everything. Especially here in the Lounge.
Edit to add this freakin' amazing link to the KCMO Public Library! http://www.idesignarch.com/kansas-city-public-library-missouri/ Sooooo cool!

(33,024 posts)Ev'rythin's up to date in Kansas City
They've gone about as fur as they c'n go!
They went and built a skyscraper seven stories high,
About as high as a buildin' orta grow.
Ev'rythin's like a dream in Kansas City,
It's better than a magic lantern show!
Y' c'n turn the radiator on whenever you want some heat.
With ev'ry kind o' comfort ev'ry house is all complete.
You c'n walk to privies in the rain and never wet your feet!
They've gone about as fur as they c'n go,
(Yes sir!)
They've gone about as fur as they c'n go!

They got a big theayter they call a burlesque.
Fer fifty cents you c'n see a dandy show.
One of the gals was fat and pink and pretty,
As round above as she was round below.
I could swear that she was padded from her shoulder to her heel,
But latter in the second act when she began to peel
She proved that ev'rythin' she had was absolutely real!
She went about as fur as she could go,
(Yes sir!)
She went about as fur as she could go!

(8,492 posts)...there were so many songs written about KC. But...is that KCMO or KCKS?

(82,333 posts)looks like some people downthread have more useful info.
Wait Wut
(8,492 posts)Please tell me this song was written in a different century.
The original Broadway production opened on March 31, 1943. It was a box-office smash
and ran for an unprecedented 2,243 performances, later enjoying award-winning
revivals, national tours, foreign productions and an Academy Award-winning 1955
film adaptation. It has long been a popular choice for school and
community productions.

(33,024 posts)I hope you can visit each other often.
I'm used to it. He was stationed in Okinawa for 5 years. I only saw him once during that time. For two years before that, he was bopping all over the country from base to base, two years after he was in CA. So, for 9 years we saw each other rarely. He's my only kid and we're very close, so I'm definitely not looking forward to it. He has an amazing wife so I know he'll eat right and stay out of trouble.
I'm already working on my vacation schedule.

(4,833 posts)I think there was a song called "Kansas City" years back.
It's in the middle, somewhere, and pretty good size for that area of the world.
That's about it for me.
It'll be fine. If he's big enough to go overseas, he's big enough to go to Kansas City.
Wait Wut
(8,492 posts)Really. I needed to know it's size relative to the rest of that area of the world.
He's my only kid, damnit. He's never big enough to do anything without consulting his mother!

A friend of mine lived there for years and I'd make BBQ pilgrimages.

(4,632 posts)The biggest thing I miss about KC is BBQ
El Supremo
(20,365 posts)But I haven't lived there in a long time. I have visited recently.
I always thought that it was one of the best cities to raise a family. It is economically stable, growth is slow but steady and it is rather pretty.

(8,492 posts)Great town, stable, fun, good people.
I love MO. Being from IL I used to vacation there often. Gorgeous state, despite the occasional backward politics. Not a fan of St. Louis, though.

(102,221 posts)and some very pretty terrain, expansion bridges, etc. in areas surrounding.
Ad you likely know, there are some extremely conservative communities surrounding and Missouri itself has had a long history of ever increasing regressive (e.g., teabagger) type politics.
That said, folks in the more rural areas North of KC are kind and very "real" examples of the "homespun" mid-Westerners.
You son could do a lot worse.

(8,492 posts)His other option was Florida.
The more I'm reading about it, the more I think he'll like it. We're from Chicago, and it seems to have all the good Chicago qualities in a pint-sized version. The DIL won't like the weather, but she adapts well.

(54,256 posts)The local mafia don (Nick Civella, I think) and his capos hung out at The Italian Gardens restaurant on Grand St.
It's been closed for a while.
No help, I know. Just a memory.
Prairie Village used to be a good upscale neighborhood for downtown commuters.
The Country Club Plaza (often referred to as The Plaza) is an American upscale shopping district and residential neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri.
That's about all I remember, except that there used to be a Playboy Club on the top floor of a downtown hotel.
Wait Wut
(8,492 posts)It looks like the type of place my DIL and I could explore! Not the Playboy Club, the Plaza. Not sure we'd have a lot of fun at the Playboy Club.

All the talk of BBQ in this thread has made me hungry. We're having leftover spaghetti for dinner. Crap.

The only draw back is the travel time/cost to visit but it's an interesting city.
