It's natural for authors to feel protective of their own novels, of the worlds and characters and ideas that they nurtured from the opening sentence. In some cases, that puts the author at odds with the film's audience; Stephen King famously hates Stanley Kubrick's The Shining because of Kubrick's thematic changes.
