(12,008 posts)It's funny... I have a friend (30-something), who grew up in Virginia. His parents moved there in the 60's or 70's from New York, and he said his dad went around trying to buy bagels, and no one knew what he meant. He'd say, "you know, it's like bread, it's round, and you eat it for breakfast," and they'd say, "Oh! You mean a doughnut. Yes, we have those." It's like trying to explain biscuits to the English. They. Don't. Get it.

Shame, real McCoy characters like that are mostly but memories now in most of the now genericized city, Brooklyn included.
