I was supposed to have a hysterscopy, a D&C and a mirena iud put in due to me having irregular periods. I was also given pills to insert the night before to dilate my cervix and I went through bad false labor pains. The gyno couldn't get past my cervix and I now have to go back on provera to induce my period or have a hysterectomy.

(5,909 posts)How old are you? Never had bad periods until I got my tubes tied at 36. After that they were horrid. OB suggested it, piece of cake and it worked.

(3,788 posts)My periods were regular until about 2 years ago. My ob/gyn is concerned due to the endometrial lining getting thicker-he said if I don't take care of it I will get cancer.

(3,147 posts)I had forty years of grief with my female system so I totally understand. A pill to dilate is new to me. Wishing you all the best.

(862 posts)I'm pretty darn conservative about men deciding women need to have "female organs" removed. You don't see them doing a lot of "male organ" removal.

(10,952 posts)did not go well.
I had a laprescopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy several years and once I recovered it was wonderful. Every lady that I know that has had a hysterectomy have all raved that it was the best thing ever and that life was so much better afterwards. Some people chose to keep their ovaries but I had everything removed because I prefer to take care of everything one time. I was on thyroid medication at the time and, because I chose not to go on hormone replacement, got the benefit of being able to discontinue the thyroid medication.
I know that I am so glad that I had it done. I have had a few surgeries and this one was a piece of cake. I totally missed the recovery room, actually had a regular lunch as soon as I got to my room, was up walking that evening and went home the next morning. The first couple of weeks were a little rough but all in all I felt so much better then I did before the surgery. I was kind of in the same position as you (cancer risk wise) and when given the same choice that you are offered now, I opted immediately for surgery and have never regretted it. My doctor told me that going the provera route would not guarantee that surgery was not down the road anyway.
Good Luck!
