Updated-My mother made it through her surgery today but we almost lost her.

Last edited Fri May 17, 2013, 10:19 AM - Edit history (1)

My mother went to have her blockages removed from her leg today and the procedure went well. The doctor used a device that went through her groin and through her artery to get to her blockages. Most but not all of her blockages were removed and one stent was inserted. Hopefully a proper blood flow has been achieved in her foot.

I went up to see her in the recovery room and she said she was not feeling well. She said it was the local they gave her that made her sick. I kissed her good bye and went to seek out her surgeon. I could not find him so I went back to the waiting room and just waited. 30 minutes later an aide comes rushing down to say you need to come up. He said she was ok but the doctor needed to speak to me. I get to the recovery room to find her surgeon placing his knee on my mothers groin to prevent her from bleeding to death. She was screaming in pain. The plug used to seal up her groin failed.

I thought this was the last time I was going to see my mother and this was going to be my memory. They rushed her into the OR to stitch her Artery up and it was fixed. The staff very good about it but I wanted to be left alone. That next hour was filled with the most horrible thoughts. But the surgeon came to me and said it was not as bad as they thought and it was fixed. He said she almost died and was lucky it happened in the hospital.

My sister and niece arrived and my sister stayed with me until 7 pm in the hospital. I spent 14 hours there with no sleep and I am still wired. My nerves however are shot!

My mother will be ok. Her vitals and blood count are good! She received 2 units of blood and has some blood in her belly but that will be absorbed by her system. Hopefully she will come back tomorrow.

Thank you for your good thoughts and prayers!

Update- She is up and eating and she will be not be coming home today. She will be getting some physical therapy today after she gets a room. I spoke to her and she was in better spirits. She wants me to bring hair brush because her hair is a mess. She should be ok. I will be going up there later in the day when she gets her room.

I am so relieved to hear she is now stable. I will be thinking of both of you. Take care of yourself, your mother will need you to be strong and well rested.

It sounds terrifying. Now you need to relax and get some rest so you will be at your best to take care of her.

It's so damn scary.

I'm glad they were on top of it. I'll bet your nerves are shot...mine are too, and I'm not even there!

Try to rest now.......She's OK.

She remains in my thoughts.....as do you.
