People love to hate on this guy, but holy HELL can he sing. Still. He puts his heart into every song, and this is perhaps my favorite.

(7,515 posts)You're probably too young to remember his television show... it was a must in my home growing up!

(29,414 posts)I don't know if my parents were a fan of him or not, only that it might have been on when I was a kid.
I don't really care for this kind of music, either. But I knew that SCTV had parodied him because I remember watching that fake commercial on their show

(72,433 posts)I will say that there's is one song of his I treasure. It's called 'Ships'. It's about a boy and his estranged father. I've always loved that song, even before my own father and I grew apart.
Great song. I've got it on my iPod.
And my friend (you know who you are): Thank you.

(17,710 posts)To owning just about everything that Barry has ever recorded. His music got me through a couple of bad breakups and I've simply always thought of him as a standup kind of guy.

for my birthday. (my poor brother). He did suffer.
I, of course, had a blast!
You must have the most awesome brother EVER!

(3,647 posts)My favorite songs are the Commercial Medley, Mandy and yes, okay, Copacabana.
I am a huge fan of John Denver's and people loved to hate on him, too. He was a great singer songwriter and left this Earth with those gifts for all of us to enjoy.

(257,762 posts)And I saw him in concert back in the '70s, went with my brother. My friends picked on me when I showed up in my souvenir Barry Manilow tee shirt, but I didn't care, he put on one hell of a show!
Not long after that, my parents just happened to run into him and his band when they were traveling in England. Of course, my mother recognized him, which surprised him, since he wasn't well known yet in England. She told him that her kids had seen him in concert and pix of Barry and my parents are in their photo album.

(14,180 posts)I really like his lesser-known songs, like "Brooklyn Blues" (from the excellent "Swing Street" album), and he did a really, really nice cover of "Cherish" with The Association on his 60s songs tribute CD.
I like Barry, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

(40,805 posts)She'd go all Ghost Rider Alejandra Jones whenever she heard him and then she'd have to move back in with my parents when they kicked her out of whatever nursing home was holding her.

The only being that accepted my grandma's demons unconditionally was her cat, who would ferociously guard the guest room while she was away.
I still have scars.
Grandma used to play the nickel slots in Las Vegas. I don't know if that had anything to do with it.
