Whereas I have a feeling the maple and paperbark will end badly for one of them...

growing out of the top of a pine tree - about 20 feet up. I'd say the apple tree is about 6-7 feet tall.

plenty of blossoms. We have several apple trees in our yard, so do our neighbors. I'm figuring a bird or a squirrel probably deposited some seeds in the tree and it just happened to be the right spot.

I planted it in a small container, curious to see what it would grow to be. By looking up plants that have leaves that surround the stems, and dandelion-like flowers, I discovered it was a smooth field sow thistle. It grew 3' tall. The leaves are edible.

-from wikipedia- Going by the name puha or rareke (raraki) it is frequently eaten in New Zealand as a vegetable, particularly by the native Māori. When cooked the flavour is reminiscent of chard.

in front of my garden every year for several years. Last year I had 2 of them. I'll watch for it this year...maybe it is the same thing, and then I'll have another edible perennial growing here!
