Do you ever Rec a Thread not because you agree or disagree but, because the
conversation that has developed is interesting and you think the thread deserves more exposure to a wider DU audience?
What are your motivating factors for rec-ing a Thread? ![]() ![]()

1. I've never rec'd based on a conversation within the thread....
but that's as good a reason as any! As long as the original OP doesn't make me crazy, I'll consider it in the future. It's a good idea.
I think I rec for the usual reasons, I agree with the OP or I think that a wide audience would enjoy it. |

6. I am not the one to ask!
I have a difficult time recognizing boundaries...
![]() But if the OP is not something totally outrageous, and you add a post stating why you rec'd it...I don't see how anyone can accuse you of shit-stirring. Would you care if someone did? I guess it all comes down to how much effort you want to devote to the matter. I do know that some threads would not receive a rec from me no matter how good the exchanges within the thread...but there aren't that many I find so totally worthless. If I may ask, what brought this to mind? |

8. I did not reply this to this thread because I really don't know how I feel/think about it ...
and it is international therefore, can I even say it is a First Amendment issue?
ah, what the heck ... it might be a good lounge topic to boot ... ![]() ![]() http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022904591 |

10. I can see why this would be a fascinating topic...
I'm a big supporter of the first amendment... and yet I would probably come down on the side of banning porn on the internet. If for no other reason than it contributes to the overall problem of sexism in this country. It's impossible to tell advertisers to stop exploiting partially naked women in their ads, when fully naked bodies, are so readily available for viewing. It's a cultural thing, which I think should be revisited and thoroughly debated.
I never bought into the 'slippery slope' argument, in fact whenever I hear it I become more than a bit annoyed. |

7. If some can make perverse recs, why not?
Perverse rec: when a replier in the thread states that he/she is giving a rec because the OP is so ridiculous that the OP author deserves more attention/embarrassment.

I've learned things through replies to the original post and for that reason I give the whole thing a Rec.

14. Wider exposure?.. sure.
Sometimes I try to get a post in a smaller forum up to the "greatest" page for more eyes.. I also recommend cross-posting when I think that the larger community should see it.
Sometimes things I think are important sink at first and I'll pop them back up to see if anyone else agrees... Sometimes it's just me saying "you bet, I agree".. or "thanks for the laugh" |

completely subjective.

Hi,
I recommend posts that I find interesting, I may or may not agree with the original post. I was digging the question about cutting the grass that lasted a few days and had a ton of responses. Peace |
