Mel a tribute to Murry will be playing at the Canyon Club next month .
actually there are dozens of tribute bands around and a lot of them are cloning bands that are pretty obscure .

(13,324 posts)I pretty much agree with you, never saw the big deal about Phish. The Deadhead thing I can kind of understand, since the Dead were a unique band with a wide-ranging repertoire - and a Phish fan would probably say the same thing about Phish, but I just don't get it, myself.

(13,324 posts)Yet I generally find their music quite a bit less enjoyable, compared to the GD.

(12,008 posts)As far as rock music goes, the dead defined some of that shit. Garcia was - though almost always tastefully understated - one of the great guitarists of 60's/70's rock and roll, along with Hendrix, Santana, etc. ... And while he only played "claw-hammer" style banjo, his work in bluegrass was also important, not in the least because he helped introduce the Rolling Stones' "wild horses" into the bluegrass canon.
I could likewise go on about the other members (at least Phil Lesh - I think he and Garcia were really the heart of the band and also the two best songwriters), but really the point is that they were all about being a band and never about showing off. All of the players in Phish are/were great too, but they also made a point of showing off in a way the dead never did. I mean, Phish would make a point of featuring a long "virtuosic" piano solo, whereas the dead would just have Bruce Hornsby play his heart out on every single tune, usually doing so without otherwise drawing attention to himself.

(12,008 posts)I also don't know how it happened. I remember them playing a local club in the 90's (probably a gig I should have gone to), and being amazed/weirded out that there were two VW buses in the parking lot of people who were "on tour" with them. A few years later, that was totally normal, as far as "normal" is concerned in those circumstances. I saw both The Grateful Dead and Phish several times. While I had a lot of fun at a few Phish shows, I feel honoured that I got to see The Grateful Dead while they still existed. I kept up with the follow-ups to them for a few years (and had a great time at some of those shows - especially Phil and Friends), but I remember one where they'd just completely killed that parking lot/tour culture, and beers were like six or seven bucks inside the venue as the end... at least for me.

(53,339 posts)Some 20 years ago, after Cass was gone, The Mamas & the Papas did a 4th of July concert in the D.C. area. Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane of Spanky and Our Gang filled in for Cass. And, because Michelle Phillips was unavailable, John's daughter, Mackenzie Phillips, filled in for her. I sat through two shows in a stadium parking lot with an audience of only 3 dozen people or so and thoroughly enjoyed it.

(25,816 posts)I play in a band, though we haven't played out lately. I would rather hear a "cover" band than a full blown tribute band, where all the members have to dress up and make up to look like the original guys, and every song is from the same band.
I like blues or original bands.

They do homage to 1980's hair metal.
