(51,122 posts)Here's a tense standoff between the dog and one of the cats in our living room.

BainsBane
(57,757 posts)I thought something similar myself. My own preference is for dogs that outweigh cats.

(20,176 posts)I've given up naming them individually...they all die too fast. They're all named Robert now.
BainsBane
(57,757 posts)They actually live about 30 days.
Chan790
(20,176 posts)I'm powerless to get rid of them...my roommate saves banana peels until he can compost them, calls it environmentalism. I call it disgusting. I throw them away and we argue.

fizzgig
(24,146 posts)took my dad a couple of years to finally root them out.
BainsBane
(57,757 posts)You can put them on the compost pile right after peeling them.
Chan790
(20,176 posts)He's saving them up 3 days to 1 week and taking them someplace else to compost.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)if not, that is absolutely disgusting.
set a small glass of beer or soapy water next to the problem area, it'll help.

(23,973 posts)When my sons still lived here, add three kitties, an iguana, several bearded dragons, various snakes, a salt water aquarium, two fresh-water aquariums, and a bunch of chameleons.
Son worked at a exotic pet store working his way through school.
Trust me, five kitties is a breeze.

(11,464 posts)at the moment, 2 indoor only cats. One is like a Russian Blue cat, all my cats I ever had were adopted from shelters
except one now deceased(old age) I found on the D train in Brooklyn years back
Of the two we have now, one is a Russian Blue cat adopted from shelter
this describes him perfectly, smartest cat of many we have had over the years
http://www.animalsites.net/news/cats/russian-blue-cat-specs-pictures/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Blue
the other is a orange/brown calico type
We lost at 17 years old, our white cat last year during Hurricane Sandy (to old age).
It was really sad.
About a month later went to two different shelters, and just by luck the one we found was there.
Most loving, playful smart cat (and I am only the second favorite of him in the house).
Like the article says, he very much acts like a dog in some ways, and can open and close shower doors, cabinet doors, and closet doors.
Likes a little crumpled up paper acting as a ball, and also likes tennis balls
Have had dogs in the past, miniature schnauzer's.

(5,851 posts)If I had a bigger place than my 1-bedroom apartment I might have more pets--I'm still trying to decide whether I'm too lazy to have a dog and how the cat would react if I did. I'm absolutely crazy about my kitty and would hate for her to feel jealous.
Edited to add photo. Her name is Summer and she's a Siamese mix:

(34,189 posts)A few thousand tadpoles which are rapidly morphing into tiny frogs.
The number of goldfish is unknown. We had four in the upper pond and 11-12 in the lower one. The fish in the upper pond spawned and we have baby fish that are between 1/2" and two inches, though they get bigger daily. Two or three of the babies are gold with black and/or white spots. The rest are just carp. Since the goldfish were feeder goldfish I bought cheap, I'm happy we have any with color!
Demoiselle
(6,787 posts)Their feral mama hangs around outside, will NOT come in, but allows me to feed her. I'v managed to capture her long enough to have her neutered...and all her progeny are neutered, of course.
Two dogs as well.. at the moment, one Great Pyrenees (the stoic Wilbur) and one very mixed shelter veteran, sweet sweet girl, who has, in about two weeks, become Wilbur's BFF. I have yet to properly name her. Brenda, maybe.

(72,300 posts)Today, as I was cleaning out the main cage, he flew out. After I picked him up off the floor, I held him gently for a while. I usually don't handle the doves but he really seems to have a soft spot in his heart just for me. Cute little guy with a double orange ring around his eyes. Only 2 of the 11 look like that.
Mom & Dad have a separate cage.

(18,101 posts)that is in a nest in some equipment I have temporally stored under a bay window. I just found it a little while ago. I was getting some stuff that I will need tomorrow when I uncovered her. The poor little thing looked scared shitless. I called my daughter to come and see it. We were able to get what I needed without disturbing her and covered her back up.
Here's a pic of one from last year. My daughter named her Pickles. The new one is smaller and lighter.

Edit - here's the new one:
