Pete Seeger, as a member of the Folk oriented The Weavers, brought this old old song to the masses in the 1950's.

Seeger gained national status as being one of the hundreds civil rights activists who were brought before the McCarthy tribunal. He was blacklisted for years and had his re-coming out on the Smother Brothers Show in the late 60's.

He wrote Turn, Turn, Turn and If I Had a Hammer. He also was one of the activists who started to sing We Shall Overcome at rally's in the 50's and 60's.

Believe it or naught, Goodnight Irene was a powerful tools of the left in the 50's and 60's.
