I wonder about the origin of phrase “Nanny nanny poo poo.” As a boomer, I never heard it as a kid.

My niece, born in 1980, used to say it, about 1985 or so.

Anybody know when it originated?

When I was a kid (in the 50's), it was "Nanna, nanna, nanna". without the boo boo. I don't know the origin, however.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taunting

In Croatia, children sing in that tune: "Ulovi me, ulovi me, kupit ću ti novine. Novine su skupe, poljubi me u dupe.", which means: "Catch me, catch me, [if you do that] I'll buy you a newspaper. Newspaper are pricey, kiss my tushie."

And I've only ever heard it with "boo boo"

and the full taunt is Nanny nanny boo boo, stick your head in doo doo.

I do not remember when I first heard it though. I've lived all over the south from Maryland to Texas and many places in between.

When I googled the etymology I read one theory that says the idea (if not the exact words) dates back to the Roman empire but there were no citations or anything to back that thought up.

I find this hilarious.

Especially the French: "Nananananère, pouette pouette camembert!"
