As a child, my father took us (mom, 4 kids and a dog) camping to the East Coast every summer by car from the mid 50's to the mid 60's. Even did PEI by ferry one year.
Sometimes we came through Canada to the East, others we came through the NorthEastern States.
In the early 70's I traveled down the East Coast to Florida - a wandering route.
In the late 70's - I planed to Vancouver, bussed down the West Coast to San Diego California, scooted through the deserts (they are hot!) - did a car trip to Vegas, even slipping into Mexico, then drove cross-country back to Canada in 1980.
Yeah, I wander . . .
no regrets.

The time/date is correct.
A life changing event happened shortly before that. (a good one)
Went from living in a trailer for years with no hydro, no running water, minimal heat, etc., to being able to buy a home, rent a decent motel room in the interim and have all that stuff ( heat, hydro, running water, internets)
and pretty well partied on (yep - beer was involved)
so no mystery / timewarp (well - self-inflicted I suppose) or time continuum thingie going on.

I have been to all of the lower 48 in addition to Mexico 3 times (over 900 miles below Laredo,Tx) about half way between Mexico City and Vera Cruz. Also been to the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Still places I would like to get to. The western Canadian provinces and Alaska.
However I do commend you on having been to as many state side as you have.

Now I see why the USA is so interested in the thawing "NorthWest Passage"
It's within Canada's International Boundary.

I believe China sent an ice-cutter through there recently.
Truckers aren't just truckers for the $$ methinks - getting paid to travel all over the continent - well WOW! - Yup, there's the bullshit paperwork, the asshole drivers on the road, the fuzz - ya name it - it has it's downside
Gotta focus on the upside (most do) - ya get to see what most do not - especially sittin' high up in the seat of a big rig!
I'm a retired Automotive and Heavy Duty (truck and coach) mechanic. Have a few friends that are truckers on FB - post pics of their travels and rigs regularly.

(322 posts)That is an awesome map.
Never seen one like it.
And the good, the bad, and you the ugly of life on the road. It is all there for sure.
Of course you saw it from a different side, can just imagine your take, like the rest of us on the engineers who design vehicles....cussed them a lot myself when trying to work on my own equipment.
ConcernedCanuk

think they should all serve as mechanics before they ever design a vehicle.
I dodged the word "engineers" on purpose - most engineers have some semblance of wisdom.
Have to remember though, it's the management figuring out how to make the most profit on BUILDING the vehicle, so maintenance and repair is secondary.
I remember one vehicle, a Chevy Monza you had to unbolt the motor mounts and jack up the engine just to change the spark plugs!
And to this day - many oil drain plugs are located so they splash over another part of the underneath and make a mess - filters too.
Any of these so-called engineers ever done so much as an oil change??
Suspect not . . .

Not sure where you live, but if it's in Canada, and not in BC,
I would train to BC - then bus down.
I flew from Ontario to BC, missed all the provinces in between - I'll drive/train/bus next time - see part of the rest of my own country.
When I was down in San Diego, got my own vehicle and drove cross country back to Ontario.
That was another adventure I won't forget.

Being surrounded by water so close to the Equator, Florida is quite humid - heck, even the laundromats had air conditioners just to make them bearable.
Plan a cross-Canada tour in a couple years - to the West. Always travelled to the East with my parents and family as a kid - time to go the other way methinks.
With any luck, (and enough gas money) - I'll make it to Alaska.
That would be great!

(50,566 posts)Can't remember if I've been to Indiana or not. If so, it was just driving through a corner. The ones I'm missing are the cold north-central ones (Nebraska, Dakotas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan). Oh, also Louisiana--I really want to go to New Orleans.
dr.strangelove
(4,851 posts)We had a debate about this when a friend and I wanted to hit all 50 states before we were 30 and I claimed I had only missed Hawaii. She said a visit must involve a meal or an overnight. For a few I literally drove over the state line, got out of the car, did a little dance, and got back in the car.
With her little rule on meals, I figured out which states I had "missed" and hot all of them with my job over the next few years. I still have not been to Hawaii, but my wife and I are planning a trip there next year.
Chan790
(20,176 posts)Colored states are states I've been to, Safety Orange states are states I've lived in.

Tommy_Carcetti
(44,499 posts)
For the record, my personal ground rules on what constitutes a "visit":
To have physically "visited" a state, you must have actually set foot on the ground state itself, or on a fixed structure within that state.
Thus, layovers where you get off the plane and go into the airport count as a "visit" for me (that's how I count Texas). However, a layover where you remain on the plane does not count. (Why I don't count Alabama, where I stayed on the tarmac at the Birmingham airport). Also, driving through a state but not stopping and getting out of the car does not count as a "visit" to me.
I also don't count states that you were too young to remember visiting. My parents took us on a road trip to visit relatives in Kansas when I was 2, but since I don't remember any of it, I don't count any of those states that I "visited" on that trip.
