This is a really hard question for me. So I'll give the top 5:
OK Computer- Radiohead

Dark Side of the Moon- Pink Floyd

In Rainbows- Radiohead

The Suburbs- Arcade Fire

IV-Led Zeppelin

I know it sounds like hyperbole to say that a record album changed your life, but that one certainly did mine.

Inspired by the writings of Anne Rice, and just "Goth" enough to have maybe not aged as well as their other albums; gritty, hard-edged rock from L.A.'s underworld. But one of the best I've ever heard.
Not a bad song on the album.
And the closer, "Tomorrow, Wendy", one of the best songs ever.
I've posted about my jaw-dropping first-listen before. But if you want, I'll tell it again.

(1,569 posts)I'm a huge Elvis Costello fan and both My Aim is True and This Year's Model (his first two albums) remain my "go to" albums, but I started out loving about 1/2 those songs and over time the other half grew on me until I appreciated many of them more than the ones I loved initially.
With Concrete Blonde, virtually every song became a favorite the first time I heard it. I've been lucky enough to see them live--even if it was well past the band's peak (about 2001 or so)--and they are an excellent live band too.

(3,843 posts)him do a song called "She"? It was originally written by a French/Armenian singer songwriter, Charles Aznavour, but I really like Francesco Renga's version in Italian. It just sounds really good in that language.
Of course, Aznavour does a great job too:

(5,364 posts)In my opinion, VH peaked early, and I have no use for their post 1980 stuff. Full disclosure though: I like my rock and roll HARD. In 1978, during the dark years between the proliferation of "corporate rock" and disco being in full bloom, the first VH album was a blazing energetic shot in the arm to rock. The same can and would be said for bands like the Ramones and the NWBHM bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, though I did not yet "discover" them till a year or two later.
nomorenomore08
(13,324 posts)As for VH, I honestly think all the DLR albums are really good, and even the Hagar ones have their moments - though that's kind of getting into guilty pleasure territory for me. And the one with Cherone was frickin' terrible.

(1,569 posts)Back in the early 70s I got a used stereo system with a Sony reel-to-reel and a box of tapes full of jazz and blues. I "discovered" the Butterfield Blues Band and played that tape to death. Other gems in the box that I still listen to 40+ years later (on CD rather than reel-to-reel sadly) was Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks (Where's the Money), Leon Russell. and tons of Herbie Hancock.

(4,858 posts)...sometimes recognizing the obvious is what you need to do. *But*. I'm not 100% convinced that "Kind of Blue" is *better* than "Miles Smiles" or "Filles de Kilimanjaro". It's basically a three-way tie in my mind, though if you put a gun to my head, I'd say "Kind of Blue" is first among equals...

(6,248 posts)It received critical acclaim immediately upon its first release and subsequently has been placed on numerous widely circulated lists of best albums of all time. In 1987, as part of their 20th anniversary, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number seven on "The 100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Years". The 1995 Mojo list of the 100 Best Albums ranked it as number two, and it ranked nineteenth on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003. Astral Weeks became and remains a cult favourite, despite the fact that it failed to achieve significant mainstream sales success for decades; after 33 years, it finally achieved gold in 2001.[2] Music historian Andrew Ford compared its musical sophistication and commercial success to classical music "neither instant nor evanescent: Astral Weeks will sell as many copies this year as it did in 1968 and has every year in between".[3]
Forty years after the release, Morrison performed the songs on the album live during two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in November 2008. Other concerts followed with a CD and DVD from the Hollywood Bowl performances released in 2009. Warner Bros. Records had not promoted the album with touring when it was released in 1968.

(29,346 posts)I was searching through the thread to see if anyone had mentioned Van Morrison. I figured someone might mention Moondance, which is a good album and which I think of first because it has Into the Mystic, which automatically puts it in the running. The A-side is as good as any album side ever, I think. But the second half isn't as good. So as far as albums go, I'd agree with you on Astral Weeks as a Van Morrison representative.
If the subject were "under-appreciated albums," I'd offer Veedon Fleece as the Van Morrison entry.
