(24,856 posts)And that's because of my past experiences with outdated products. But, whoa, those pies you bought are outrageously outdated & I hope you take them back to show to the manager.

(18,219 posts)if I had bought those pies, and saw that date, I would be right back at that store with them. That really is disgusting. I will have to consider looking at more dates now. Frozen foods, canned goods, etc.---I never think about it, nor do I care. I have had canned goods or jar items for 5 years after the dates and they are still fine.

(8,646 posts)but then I had a bad experience with Kraft Dinner at my mom's. My parents don't eat it, but would keep it for the kids when we would visit. My then-husband opened up the cheese and it was RANK. Seriously rotten. The exp date was about a year past. My parents had bought it at our last visit and just kept it thinking it was a 'non-perishable'.
Now I check everything and have been known to dig for the best dates.

(11,065 posts)Stores aren't always careful, and having always had to live on a tight budget I couldn't ever afford to overlook expiration dates. Any over the counter meds I REALLY scrutinize for the date. I need the meds to be within their effective date for at least a year since with most OTC meds I likely will take a long time to use it up.
Last winter I screwed up with getting a special supplement for the dog (and it was pretty expensive) that I forgot to check the date and I didn't realize until I got it home that it was FOUR years past its expiration date! This was in a specialty expensive store, and when I brought the stuff back I couldn't find what I needed that wasn't expired... and by a LONG time. I checked out stuff on the shelves and looked at dates of other things and found that about HALF the stuff was expired and by a LONG time. I'll NEVER shop their again for anything.
Come to think of it, they were supposed to special order that stuff for me but I never heard from them again and never got my money back since I had decided to let them order a new one and apply the previously paid amount to it. That dog isn't even alive anymore, so I have no need of the supplement anymore, and they still owe me that money.
Now I'm mad. I had forgotten all about that.

(30,885 posts)Perfect example...pine nuts.
RIDICULOUSLY expensive, even when you buy them in bulk (but an essential ingredient in pesto and a number of other Italian dishes).
Turns out LUCKY MARKET had a little jar of them (same size but about 2/3 the height of an average spice jar).
SIX BUCKS!
And there were around 7 jars that were 3 to 4 months past their expiration date.
Pine nuts are like any other nut. They contain oil, and they can go rancid.
A local "British Foods" store had the brand of Earl Grey tea I like. All cans on the shelf were at least 6 months past the expiration date. This was loose tea in a tin, but I still wouldn't buy it. I went to Williams-Sonoma and they had teh same brand with plenty of months to spare on the date.

(34,658 posts)Its stamped on the bottom of their feet, so its kind of hard to get a look unless its a beach date, though.
