I just received a notice for a browser update to Firefox 22.0.
It seems to me that as soon as my browser starts behaving properly, Mozilla comes out with an update. I go ahead with the update and Firefox starts acting hinky. Anyone else notice this? This time I'm holding off on the update because it invariably causes my add ons to shut off or the browser starts to hang. Anyone else notice this?
Oh, and to all DUers, Enjoy a safe and fun Independence Day. Hope nobody's stuck at work. Get outside and enjoy the day! Catch a movie tomorrow.
And don't forget the sunscreen!
ETA: gotta go to Home Depot for some stuff. Back in a bit.

(20,176 posts)Mozilla decided about a year ago that IE was their main competition so they decided to use the one advantage they had to try to bury IE...their ability to short-cycle browser upgrades effectively. It takes IE months or years between upgrades because they want to get everything right and release as a stable bundle. Further, they reject the use of 3rd party add-ons and extensions as a means of serious user-driven modification meaning they have in-house incorporate every major possible modification themselves which also necessitates their approach to roll-out complete-package new versions.
Mozilla undertook a oppositional strategy to roll-out upgraded versions as soon as serious improvements are made rather than as bundles of improvements like IE was doing; in fact, they internally committed to aim for roll-out of new versions every 6 weeks into perpetuity until they had reached a point where they had the most-stable and best extension-accommodating browser on the market. The downside of this is because they cannot accommodate for every extension and add-on, you as the end-user become your own beta tester for the suite of modifications you are choosing to run. This is a problem that those of us who run Linux are used to, we deal with it in our OS every time we install or delete software.
It's really up to you on how often you want to upgrade your Firefox...if you wanted to do it every 6 months, you could but you'd potentially be facing dramatic changes and extension-incompatibilities with each upgrade because you'd be skipping 3-5 versions in the middle.

(3,871 posts)was mixed in with the letters, etc. I updated to 22.0 and all problems went away. I keep the add ons to a minimum so enabling/disabling was no problem. You'll like this update, much faster browsing.

(3,065 posts)This version of Firefox is not compatible with my Norton Security suite. So much for the update. No big deal. I'm okay with the 21.0 for now.

(3,065 posts)But like I said, the browser is pretty stable right now. I'm gonna leave it alone.
I appreciate the advice monmouth3. Thanks.

(22,308 posts)Firefox runs perfectly for me so I tend to not fix what ain't broken.
I also love the way my Norton 360 works on my Android phone. It will take a hell of a lot more than some browser update to make me give up my Norton.

(3,065 posts)Norton's been taking pretty good care of me so I'm hesitant to remove or disable it.

(22,308 posts)To disable it now would be money wasted.

(20,176 posts)If there's a Norton conflict, that's a major conflict. It's not like when I have a conflict with some small third-party extension. You won't be the only person facing it and it'll be fixed in the coming days either by Norton with a patch or by Mozilla via code-fix. Usually it happens same-day or next-day but who knows with the holiday.

(7 posts)I noticed over the last few months that FF will nag me about updates AFTER I've disabled the Check for updates box. THIS is UNACCEPTABLE.
I have used Firefox since its early days( my name is included in the NYT full page ad inviting IE users to try FF) and THIS is UNACCEPTABLE.
I was nearing the end of a web site project ( I am a php programmer ) and didn't want to switch browsers then so I just put up with it and VOWED I would switch browsers at my convenience.
I now use Opera as my work aka serious browser and Firefox as my do-dumb-meaningless-shit browser. Usually both are up all day but when FF interrupts me with that damn modal message seriously encouraging me to upgrade I DO NOT. I switch to another always open (CENTOS Linux) terminal windows and push up arrow to recall the last 'killall firefox' command. The ONLY reason i use FF now is 'cuz its so damn satisfying to kill the son-of-a-bitch that thinks its going to nag me into anything.
I smell a rat with this FF behavior. Find another browser my friend. NOT IE either. Opera is generally considered to be the best in standards compliance.
Or do as I do, use FF for trash or only specific things a FF plugin allows you to do. And kill its process EVERY time it pops up. It every 3 minutes-- i've timed it.

(9,077 posts)until lately. The newest version is not compatible with Linux so I'm no longer able to use it. I use Firefox & Chrome/Chromium.
that's the version I decided to stay with ad infinitum.
