Then when Cali crossed the rainbow bridge a friend gave me an all black kitten who naturally became Raven.

Layla (or Leyla) means dark beauty, and she is that!

I knew a wonderful black lab-rottweiler named Annie, but she got that name because she was at the elementary school every day and several people tried to locate her owner but were unsuccessful. Then the couple next door decided to adopt her and she was given the name "Annie" (as in "Little Orphan Annie&quot

Ursula means bear- her nickname could be Ursi or Suli.

Edit to add add- Acadia, but call her Cady or Cadie.

.
.
.

A derivative of Rottie and black lab

A 2-syllable name for a dog is very useful - different inflections on the last syllable makes it clear whether you are pleased or not, and assists in "fetching" them when they wander out out site.

The dog I grew up with from birth to the age age of 15 was named Lady (and she was for all her 17 years).

when she wandered, we would call - Ladyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Hard to do that with a name like bigfoottttttttttttttttt.

If she follows you around a lot

consider Shadow . . .

shadows are black

Sun Jul 21, 2013, 01:02 AM

my first dog, a long-hair black girl of indiscriminate heritage, was named Miss Muffett or "Muffie" for short. Loved that dog. It not a name heard often and generally works with little kids, I suppose.

After Muffie we had Ginger, a ginger-colored boxer.

My next dog, after I became an adult, was a black poodle named Tinkerbell. Tink has been gone for about 30 years now and sometimes I think of her. I used to keep her picture on the mantle -- to remind me why I don't want another dog. She was loving, but got into everything. Very high maintenance. She loved to spread garbage from the kitchen all over the house. She could open cabinet doors and get into things. No matter how many times I let her outside to do her business before I left the house, she always managed to save a few tablespoons to deposit at the front door when I left -- even if I only went out to the mail box. Yes, the stories I could tell about this girl. Her best joke was the time she slept in my closet on my pile of dirty clothes and one morning had a puppy. Just one. Don't know how she even got pregnant as the back was all fenced and she wasn't allowed out to roam. We called the puppy Surprise.

As fondly as I remember them, I don't want another dog. We have 4 cats in the house and it just wouldn't work.
