Usually used from a small boat (a punt), intended for harvest of waterfowl. (Saw a lot of use in English coastal villages.)

If I recall they were normally loaded with a pound of powder and a pound of shot. They would row out at night to the edge of a flock of sleeping geese floating in the bay and blast away. They would normally get 20 or 30 birds in one shot.
