Help with a debate between me and my dad

We are debating whether or not Johnny Depp is a great actor, and decided to take it to the DU community. Give input please!

3. I'm not sure how you can debate something which is entirely subjective

He's never received an Academy Award, although he's been nominated a few times. He does have a Golden Globe award, for what that is worth. So one could say his peers don't consider him a "great" actor, although a few great actors never received either award as well. There are also some who did receive such awards and probably shouldn't have.

as we like to debate these kind of things, along with things like which superhero would beat which others. It's all fun and games.

5. I would like to see him branch out and stretch his talent and go for a more subtle role

like he did early on in his career with Benny and Joon, and What's eating Gilbert Grape.

He is very good at creating a character with make up and costume.

That was some of his best work. I also like what he did in the 9th Gate, although the "special" effects at the end kind of ruin the entire movie.

11. I would say, verging on great

He has a wonderful range. His most recent movies (pirates of whatever, Alice in wonderland) haven't taken advantage of his skills. Haven't see Lone Ranger, but would go to see it solely for Depp.

I think Depp's whole take on life and his celebrity is that it's all just a big hoot.
He's amused by it all.
Some jobs he takes for the necessary cash.
Once in a while a challenge comes along.
He's just having a good time, and more power to him.

He sure made Tonto into a very new and different character.

I don't think he's bad necessarily. But as Tuesday Afternoon said I've rarely seen him do a subtle roll. He's usually a Disney character or something else over the top. I really don't care for that type of thing that much.
