By which I mean that I hear "things" in white noise sounds.
No, I'm not off my meds again -- I've had this happen most of my life on and off. It's probably fairly common, no stranger than seeing faces in clouds. I'm going through a strong phase of it now, though, and it's distracting.
Usually it's singing. Last night I kept hearing some sort of doo-wop singing with the AC on. It's very repetitive and it's just beyond my ability to quite make it out.
Just now, while (electrically) shaving, I heard some sort of ethnic chanting "hey-owie-hey-o-ayie-oweo". Over and over again.
I hear something like Viennese Waltz music in my white noise generator. I wish I could write it down, it's pretty good, though, again, repetitive.
Anyone else "suffer" from this? Know any tricks to make it stop?
Don't worry, If my blender starts suggesting homicide, I'll see someone about it.

I'm hoping you're a musical person.

(6,261 posts)I think I just have this overall tendency to various forms of Pareidolia. I see faces and dinosaurs in our marble bathroom tiles too.

I found that I could "draw" pictures in them using just my forefinger

(5,364 posts)Generally, it's not one appliance as such, but certain combinations of noises from different things during certain conditions cause me to "hear" things that aren't really present such as music, voices, my phone ringing. What'll trigger it is say a combination of the central A/C blower intake through the filter and the whoosh of water coursing through the plumbing. Or the dishwasher's varying sounds with a neighbor's lawn mower.
I've heard others descriptions of sounds you can't get out of your head. One wag termed it as the condition of being "mind fucked".

Place the paper in the midst of the appliances.
Step away and shut the kitchen door.
Let them hash it out. They'll be too busy to talk to you.

(11,865 posts)It seems to me that if your white noise generator is doing this, there's not much point in using it. Is the sound it's covering up somehow more distracting?

(21,020 posts)white noise sort of machine with different sounds on it like ocean, babbling brook, crickets, etc.
Some of them do, after a while, sound like someone is repeating the same phrase over and over again.
