in Vietnam, rather than in WWII.

My own personal opinion about the demographic appeal of the film is that they were trying to do a war film at the height of Vietnam, and the height of the protests against it. And the task therefor was to make a movie that appealed to pro-war, right-wing hawks, and also to opponents of the war, symbolized by Sutherland's new-agey character.

I saw the movie, and I don't think it quite succeeded in whatever it was trying to do. It may be because I'm a former tanker, and the portrayal of tank operations in the film didn't pass muster with me.

It's not a documentary.

It's just for entertainment.

Never even been close to a tank, but I knew it was a spoof on reality.

I suspect most of the viewers also knew that,

but I respect your sensitivity as having actually been involved.

War, and war's reality is not that much fun.

We all know this.

Film (Kelly's Heroes) is based upon a true incident. The caper was covered in a book called "Nazi Gold: The Sensational Story of the World's Greatest Robbery - and the Greatest Criminal Cover-Up" by Ian Sayer and Douglas Botting. The heist was perpetrated by a combinations of renegade Nazi and American officers. It was also listed as the "biggest" robbery ever in the Guinness Book of Records, in the 1960's.

...the setting that gives the lie to the "good war," the sense of the soldiers that their commanders don't know what the fuck they're doing, and have another look at Oddball.

Yeah, the movie's set in WWII Europe, but it's about another war on another continent.

Not a single American GI was part of the escape. The Germans moved them to another part of the camp before they were ready to use the tunnel.

I called him Mr Cool because of McQueen's minimalist acting style. He never did more than necessary to get the point across.

To which, Moriarty responds, "Crap!"

Stuart Margolin played Little Joe and a few years later guested in the series M*A*S*H; Sutherland starred in the movie.
Margolin also played Aimes Jainchill in Death Wish and gave the Paul Kersey character the .32 caliber Colt revolver.
