I do....
I often thought about legally dropping my first name..... it's one of those old Biblical names..... and just cropped up as a mention of a gun-nut who got busted that had an arsenal of munitions along with his two adult sons....

(72,134 posts)My father and grandfather had the same first-middle name combination, and both of them answered to their middle name. I coldn't figure out why they kept passing down a name they didn't like. But I don't have a son, so the unacceptable name combination ends with me.
And really, how pretentious would Xxxxxx-Xxxxxx the IV be, anyway?

Also most of the name holders died in their 50s so the next generation wanted to keep the memory active.

(35,176 posts)It does get to be a pain sometimes so I usually put my drivers license down with both so I can show it. Boy you do not want to have a plane ticket under your middle name. I almost did not get to fly because my ticket used my middle name, not my first. I had to show all kinds of ID to get to board. Never expected that. Plus, the Airport Security at Kansas City is the worst and most abusive I have ever encountered. Total asswipes, even before 9/11. They are probably just bored.
I loathe my first name, not because it is awful but because I am anything but the kind of person you envision with that name. My middle name may be plain and sucky but at least it is not like my first name.

"Pua'a" is pig. So someone must have thought the fish bore some resemblance to a pig.
Oh yes, E komo mai (welcome) to DU!
I took some lovely underwater photos of that fish a bunch of years ago. I still have a tee shirt that says Speak Softly and Carry a Big Name.
A very pretty fish and I believe the state fish? I think so...

(35,176 posts)That seems harsh for such a nice fish with such a cool name.
What did they replace it with? All I can find is the Hawaiian Trigger Fish and that is the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a I believe.
I have always thought that the Trigger Fish family were the coolest of all the fishes.

I'm glad that I don't because my middle name is a last name and much more of a boy's name.

(21,020 posts)as much as I've always disliked my first name, my middle name is worse.
Although when I sign my legal signature, I do include my middle initial.
Only because it starts with "E" and I can make a pretty fancy cursive "E". So it looks sort of neat.

(10,420 posts)It's because his first name is given to girls probably about ten thousand times more often than boys and he hates it. His middle name is much more masculine.
He was named after his father and I guess maybe in the early twentieth century it was more common for men to have the name.

(40,672 posts)If you don't like any of the names on your birth certificate then feel free to choose another. It's a human right just as soon as one becomes a self-aware human being.
No need to wait for any adult initiation ceremonies or other stressful balderdash. If a five year old wants to be called "Rock," or "Pink," or "Armstrong," if a boy wants to be called a girl's name, or a girl wants to be called a boy's name, then that's what you call them. Generally kids settle on some name by the time they are adults, usually something not too flamboyant unless they are flamboyant themselves, which is a special and often difficult blessing.
I had two grandparents living by birth certificate names, and two who did not. Most of my traceable ancestors did not. This makes genealogy difficult. Family reunions were often confusing. Aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives would reappear with different names.
Official documentation is just a nuisance. God, family and friends will always know who you are, and nobody else really matters. It's just paperwork.
I'm Hunter, BTW. I'm pretty conservative so far as names go. It is a family name and I'm fine with that.

Although at work I get called by all my names and some that ain't.
My dad's nickname was Butch. No idea why - I am named after him and my grandpa (I'm the third). There's no Butch anywhere in there. My grandpa mostly answers to our first name but close family and friends called him a nickname for our last name. Well, them that don't call him "grandpa."

That does allow me the neat trick of making up a different middle initial wherever I have to give out my name. This allows me to track who's selling my name by checking the middle initial.

(21,046 posts)My first name is from one of my grandparents who died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Nothing wrong with it, parents just called me by middle name.
I really hate forms with "First Name-Middle Initial-Last Name" because they assume everyone goes by their first name.
Since first name was a grandmother's name, I gave it to my daughter to pass it on.
However I wish I'd hyphenated her last name (she has her father's last name like most people) so I could name her after a famous Oscar Wilde character. The guy with the portrait that does strange stuff.

(8,646 posts)and so do all her sisters (but not brothers). The story goes like this...they lived in the boonies, so a few weeks before her due date, my grandmother would take the train to the nearest hospital and go have a baby. After the baby was born, she'd stay there a week, name the baby, fill out all the papers, and come home. Everytime she brought home a daughter, my grandfather decided he didn't like the first name my grandmother had picked and used the middle name. When my one aunt was born, my grandmother was thrilled to have a baby with blond curls and used a name she associated with a beautiful blond starlet. She added a plain middle name. My grandfather severely disliked this 'trendy' name and refused to call my aunt by that name. So next time my grandmother went more traditional. My mom was named after my grandmother's mother and my grandfather's mother in that order. My grandfather didn't like that her first name was not his mother's name, so started calling my mom by his mother's name. His reason was that she looked more like HIS side of the family. This is true, but the way the names are put together sounds better.
Anyhow, my mom is just now, in her 50's, getting around to having it legally changed. There has been so many mess ups on documents because she goes by her middle name, but all her id is with her first name...and her first name isn't very common so it gets misspelled to add to the confusion.
I always wanted to be called by my middle name. My middle name is very common and was popular at the time, whereas my first name is not as common and has several different pronunciations which makes it very annoying. Also the nickname of my first name is more common than the name, so people see my name and automatically call me by the nickname (which I have NEVER gone by). Like if someone signs in at the doctor's office as Elizabeth, do you think she's going to automatically respond to 'Lizzie!'?? Well, medical staff when I was younger used to think that about my name. When I wouldn't respond, they would start in with my last name and I'd say, "Oh, that's me, I don't go by <insert nickname here>...did I write it down wrong?" Anyway, my middle name would've saved me a lot of grief, lol.
