(37,428 posts)...and certainly not another reboot full of half-smart nods and winks at the original.
Now, a daring show that extended and challenged the commercial TV formula might be welcome.

(3,066 posts)Of course we do. How else are going to solve the problems that plague our society if we don't look at it from the future to see how we did it?
Besides, there are other issues in the galaxy that may involve our little planet and I want to be in the loop when they have answers to give us.
And I, for one, welcome our galactic overlords.

(7,720 posts)My calculations are that Star Trek has been revived in 5 television series. Isn't that enough?

(13,157 posts)The formulaic schlock that poses to be writing with all the test audiences and studio interference now-a-days sucks.
Instead of different episodes by different writers with different themes and points of view to be explored, you get long, graphic novel story arcs that get re-written to hell and back in the middle of the story because "somebody doesn't like the way it's going", it's "too slow developing", "why doesn't character X fall in love with character Y - the female demographic would love it"... and all sorts of other excuses that change the entire focus of the character development and sends the story off to an unsatisfactory conclusion either way too soon or way too long.
When TOS, TNG, and DS9 were successful, it was because there was a framework created to tell stories in, and a wide range of fleshed out, established and fairly relatable characters that weren't the sole focus of the stories. If you didn't like one character, there was usually a different one that you could relate to.
IMO, what would be better would be a "re-boot" Twilight Zone. But that takes too much thinking and is too risky, unless you have a really, really good producer and a really good opening hook.

Of course, Rod Serling was narrating that one, too.

(8,636 posts).....the original series (or Next Generation's) dynamic. What made STTOS and STTNG truly great was Gene Roddenberry's vision of a hopeful future; without Gene, the franchise soon lost it's soul. DS9 had a few good episodes, and please don't even ask me about Voyager.
I really don't think CBS would allow anything like Roddenberry's idealism and hope to hit the screen now. What we will probably get is a a militarized Starfleet, loads of techno-babble and trite, let's-find-a-new-way-to-kill-the-monster scripts.
