I personally love the stuff, but find opinions vary widely.

(32,081 posts)I'm not crazy about the cakes with citron in them. I prefer it be made with dried fruits, rather than candied fruits. And, soaked with lots of brandy or rum, which makes even the ones with the candied fruits taste better.

(34,136 posts)I thought it was OK as a child. As an adult, when my Mom & Dad finished with it, it was much better.
They'd buy it before Thanksgiving, soak it in rum for a month or more, and serve it with hard sauce - made with more rum, of course.
Children were not allowed her improved version, but my tea totaling great aunt loved it. Mom & Dad never told her their "secret" ingredients.

(41,960 posts)Candied stuff doesn't do much for me, but the idea of rum soaked cake is appealing.

(21,020 posts)think I'm a bit odd because I like it.
So did one of the raccoons the year I found a whole one in my freezer from Christmas years past.
Put it out for the raccoons...one of them ate the whole thing and gained a lot of weight. He comes around from time to time and is still fat...

(21,046 posts)The Good Stuff is at Eilenberger's in Palestine, TX. Far better than the much more famous Corsicana fruitcake (Deluxe Bakery).
Eilenberger's sells pecan cake and fudge pecan cake--far more nuts and far less fruit. Kinda like eating a tasty brick!!! They also make apricot cake and other flavors--and are gonna reopen their walk in store soon, I hope!!! I used to buy cookies and bread there.
This is the place to order yummy cakes, fruitcakes and others, and support a local business:

(36,423 posts)Some are just alright, some are good, some are great, and an occasional one is the food of the gods. Fruitcake is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get.
