How can my wife be obessed with a show in which she hates about 85 % of the characters

My wife is re-watching Mad Men on Netflix for like the 20th time and almost half the characters on this show she completely hates but can't wait for the new season starts to see what will happen.

Does anyone else watch a show that they hate the characters?

Is this some new fade or something?

Even the round face girl in "The Newsroom" gives me the creeps. (She cut her hair all weird)

But it's more because of the script - it's that Aaron Sorkin-style constant quipping and repeating what the last person said and talking over each other. Real people don't talk like that. I don't like the round-faced girl with no eyebrows, or her boyfriend, or the Will McEvoy guy, or especially the Maggie character - she's whiney and hyper. They are all so annoying all the time that I pretty much stopped watching it.

And it's exactly why I like Aaron Sorkin's style; because it transcends real life.

I appeared in a performance of a Shakespeare play once after which there was a Q&A session between actors and audience. Someone asked: "Why do all of Shakespeare's characters talk like that?"

I volunteered to answer the question for the cast.

I told the audience member: "The easy answer, and therefor, the wrong answer, is that that's how people talked in Elizabethan times. And it's not. Speech patterns may have changed, but back then, people in everyday life spoke vernacular, just like we do today. But people went to the theater to see, not a re-creation of real life on the stage, but something that transcended real life, and that includes the language.

When we go to see a play today, and it's set, say, in someone's living room, we expect to see a realistic simulacrum of a modern living room. And to hear dialogue to match."

I like to think of Aaron Sorkin as a modern-day Shakespeare; he wants his stories, characters, and dialogue to transcend mundane every day life. And I think he largely succeeds.

so irritating to listen to. I find myself wanting to yell, "Will you SHUT THE FUCK UP for just a minute? Please??" at just about all of the characters.

...she wouldn't watch the show.

Of course it's possible to like a show or film, even when you hate some of the characters. It's not a new phenomenon.

it is fiction, after all. We're not supposed to like any of the weasels or weaselettes on "Mad Men"-- we are supposed to be fascinated by their stories and glad we don't live with anyone like them.

Personally, I watch "Once Upon A Time" simply because Lana Parilla is both incredibly hot and incredibly evil. But, she's kinda clumsy at this evil stuff and gets caught a lot. That makes her even more hot. And cuddly.
