She went to HPA in Waimea on the Big Island, roomed with an Islander, and considers herself Kama'aina after having spent two years there.

After the first year, we used to kid her about speaking Hawaiian, which she adamantly insisted she did not. She was happy just to have gotten good grades in the courses she took in English (German is her native language). However, during her summer break, a song in Hawaiian came on the radio, and she started translating it for us. Completely blown away, I said, "I thought you said you hadn't learned how to speak Hawaiian?" She answered with the disdain of the arrogant teenager, "oh, come on, dad, ANYONE knows THAT much Hawaiian."

Sure. Nobody here but us Polynesians, right?
