Hello Duers!
I wanted to share few fantasy themed pieces I created this year. I'm an artist/sculptor and I've worked primarily in the toy and collectible industry for almost 20 years but I do get the chance to do some original gallery work now and then.
'Destroyer God' 18" tall epoxy putty, resin polymer clay.
'Revi-Hina' 18" tall epoxy putty, resin polymer clay. She came from a dream I had napping one summer afternoon.
'Yama' 21" tall epoxy putty, resin polymer clay. I love Buddhist and Hindu iconography and he's been a kicking around in my head for over ten years. I'm so glad he has finally seen the light of day.
And lastly this is my 'Barack Obama' bust. He's actually older than this year and of course not fantasy but I thought I'd include him.
This line of work is such a labor of love for me and I love to share! Thanks for looking guys!
Peace!

(3,134 posts)My heart wasn't into it. I was almost in my late 20's when I went to full time art. It felt nice to quit once I had enough work to keep me busy. My wife that was pulling down decent money and that made the transition so much smoother. I was a little scared but she wasn't. She knew I could do it.

Very nice.
I wish you much success...Is there a market?
AllenVanAllen
(3,134 posts)Is there a market? well, that's a good question. The last five years have been hell for the industry as people just don't have the disposable income for things like collectibles. Much of the bigger toy and collectible makers have scaled back. I've been doing my best to try and keep my head above water. As far as these pieces go, the first three are available through Krab Jab Gallery Studio out of Seattle http://www.krabjabstudio.com/ The Barack bust is available directly through me http://www.democraticunderground.com/1120348

Those are very impressive. I am an artist but have not done much sculpting and never worked in this medium, it looks like it would be very interesting. The detail is amazing and your subjects are truly otherworldly! Very well done.
AllenVanAllen
(3,134 posts)You should most certainly try your hand at sculpture! It's SO fun and you don't have to create the entire illusion as opposed to 2D art. I draw and paint a little but my strength is the 3D stuff. If you have any questions about my techniques please feel free to pm or ask here. Thanks again!

(86,335 posts)I'll keep that offer in my back pocket... I just might have to give it a try. I will need to find some kind of workspace though, my cabin is pretty small and I have had to put off a number of projects due to lack of a space to do the work. I play with clay sometimes, both sculpting/building (as in coil and constructed pieces) and "on the wheel". Still have most of my tools! I'll bookmark this so I can find it when I need it.

AllenVanAllen
(3,134 posts)I use several i different mediums. These were all sculpted out of soft polymer clay that you have to cure in the over at 250-275 degrees. These have and under body armature made of wire and epoxy resin for added strength. I make the armature build the mas with epoxy resin, skin it with polymer clay bake it, clean it and paint the figures. In a nutshell that's it. For the toys i make I use sculptor's wax and that in itself is...another ball of wax. Thank you!!!

I love art of any medium and this is art, your sculpting is amazing and so life like... the contours of the body and the detail of the facial features are excellently done.

(5,909 posts)I'm going to show my kids when they get home from school...they love that show Face/Off about creating/sculpting characters with themes, and my son is pretty creative. The last season ended last week.
Do you sell your stuff?
Although he's outgrown them and they were more for collectibles on his shelves, my son has every creature from the Godzilla movies as well as the various Godzillas (Mecha, Space) and saved up his birthday cash years ago to buy a new figure of the Cloverfield monster on ebay as it wasn't sold in stores anymore....the thing was new and unopened and is pretty damn cool. He still has that on a shelf. We loved the movie.
If you don't you should!
AllenVanAllen
(3,134 posts)Heh, I have every version of Godzilla in my studio watching over me as well as a 4' tall Godzilla right behind me. And that Cloverfield monster I have one of those I got from the folks over at Hasbro when I did a few action figure projects for them. I loved that movie! I can't wait for the new Godzilla from Legend studios! I have been doing art for money for almost 20 years now and my work is available from comic and specialty stores and of course ebay. Here's my Facebook art page where you can see some of the collectibles that can be had out there. https://www.facebook.com/GabrielMarquezArt
Thank you so much!!!
RiffRandell
(5,909 posts)We can't wait for the movie either...plus Bryan Cranston is in it. My 7 year old daughter knows all the names as when he lets her she plays with his characters.
I just showed my son and he asked if they were made out of clay and I told him yes and showed him what you wrote.
That is so cool about the Cloverfield figure....he paid over 300 bucks for his. What's funny is that yesterday I walked into his bathroom and his smaller Godzilla figures were around the sink so I'm like, uhh, what's going on here? He said he was washing them as they were dusty and put them on our hallway foyer to dry so I took 2 pictures...one of them and the ones in his room.
We went to your page and he really liked the "Martian Intellect" from War of the Worlds....super cool!
Isn't a Cloverfield sequel supposed to be in the works?

(3,134 posts)The sculptures above are clay originals, meaning they have not been reproduced and are one of a kind. But much of my work I do the 'master sculpture' or prototype and the client will take my sculpture and get it reproduced in China in limited numbers and then sold in the specialty market. The Barack bust is a poly-resin copy faux bronze produced by me in limited numbers.
I cannot wait for the new Godzilla film! I loved director Gareth Edward's first film 'Monsters.' I do believe he got the job doing Godzilla on the strength of that film. I have heard there's a Cloverfield sequel in the works. The creature in the first film was supposed to be a baby. Imagine that!
Here's the 'Kaiyodo 'Big-Guy' Godzilla I have. He's 4' tall and 6' long!!! GAH!!! I am mental!
Thanks for sharing!

Tough, making a living in art, or any creative endeavour. As an artknife maker, I've seen sales of my hand-forged beauties dry up at all venues: knife shows, online, everywhere. Thank Hephaestus that I don't need that income to survive!

(1,245 posts)Your work is fantastic. I especially like the Cthulhu piece.
AllenVanAllen
(3,134 posts)I am so excited about Cthulhu! I'm going to offer him as a limited edition resin statue and a model kit next year. I've wanted to do a Cthulhu for a while but never did due to the fact there are so many sculptures of him out there already. I wasn't sure if I could bring anything new to the table but just by chance I ended up starting him. I've decided to stay as close to the loose description of him that's given in the story. Along with the drawing Lovecraft did himself of the Great Old One. He'll top out around 20" or so with his 'wings.'
Here's H.P. LOvecraft's own drawing of the artist's statue of Cthulhu. I take into account he wasn't an artist but I am sticking to certain elements that are obvious like the number of eyes and such.
Thank you!!
secondvariety
(1,245 posts)I'm a huge Lovecraft fan and of course I check out the sites that sell the paraphernalia, and I'd have to say your Cthulhu is one of the best I've seen. You've captured him in sculpture in a way usually only seen in paintings. Maybe let us know when model kit will be ready.

(3,134 posts)I generally stay away from projects that include figures that are smaller than 3 or 4 inches. The smaller scales really aren't any easier to render for me. The last one chess set I almost worked on was going to be an official "Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds" chess set with the British military set against the Martians. Unfortunately we couldn't work out the contract details so it never happened or at least I never worked on the project.

(5,310 posts)...your Obama bust serves as a benchmark for the accuracy of the rest of your work.
Cuz that almost looks like Pres. Obama more than The Prez Hisself.
Serious question: do you do sell your work, and/or do commissions?
AllenVanAllen
(3,134 posts)Yes I do sell my sculpture. The bulk of my work for the last 20 years has been in the toy and collectible industry doing prototype sculpture for toy and statue manufacturing. I do handle a limited number of commissions from time to time.
