(28,762 posts)and called me over to help carry it into their house. When we got to the patio door we flipped the table over on it's side as we carried it into the kitchen and an old cigar box fell out and onto the floor. I kicked it out of the way and my brother said, careful there that might be full of money. It turned out to be full of money and valuable old money to boot. Lots of 20 dollar silver certificates that totaled up to over $700.00 face value. My brother kept the money.

(72,300 posts)The table could have wound up in a garbage dump. Obviously the money was forgotten ... not really needed by it's original owner.

(6,597 posts)as the poster below said, the money was obtained in some illegal way. Thinking of that possibility, it may have been the safest thing to return it.

(10,951 posts)thought would have been to question if the money had been from some type of criminal enterprise. I would hope that most rational people would not be so careless with that amount of money if it legitamently obained.

(10,951 posts)I would wonder if the money had been legally obtained. Call me a skeptic, but I would not automatically assume that the funds were from a lawful enterprise and/or inheritence. The woman is extremely lucky that the guy called her up and gave the money back. Many people would have kept it. Banking at home is not always the safest way to hold onto your money.

(20,176 posts)my grandfather was a child of the depression and never really fully trusted the existence of any money he couldn't physically possess in short order...so despite putting money in the bank and using modern financial conveniences, he always made comments about the suitcase of cash in the backyard, money for hard times, comments my family brushed off...if it was there, grandma would know where it was anyways. Then, grandpa died...then in very short order, within several months, grandma died too. Nobody had any idea where to look or if it existed or was another of his practical jokes.
My uncles wanted to sell the house. They just wanted to be rid of it immediately, not even looking for market value. My mother wanted to put in the effort to clean the house up, flip/refurbish it and wait for a good offer. They just wanted it gone. This pissed off my mother so she bought them out...then when the septic failed, she had the excavator excavate the entire backyard. When she found the money...$400,000...everybody wanted their share...and she told them that the contents of the property had sold with the house.

(4,851 posts)I like to think I would do the right thing, but that amount of money would change my life. I hope I would be able to suppress my selfishness, but I have to admit, in those circumstances, I truly do not know if I could.
