Well, it's an estimate, because when I took her in, the vet and I assumed she was older than Melanie and Scarlet, who would now be 18 and a half, so we made her a little older and gave her my birthday so I'd remember it! Happy Birthday sweetie!!!

I celebrate my Jakey's birthday the day after mine. I don't know his exact b-day, but he was about 8 weeks old at Christmas, which puts his birthday close to mine.

(56,177 posts)All six are rescues...I did know Melanie and Scarlet's because they're from a litter a neighbor's cat had.

She's 15 1/2. She's going through a lot right, now. She still has some quality of life but I don't know how much longer I'll have her. I don't want to rain on this happy birthday thread so I'm skipping the details.

(56,177 posts)Do you know the mother...was she calico and she picked up some of that also?
Good luck with her...don't worry about talking about the problems...India has a lot going on right now...bladder infection (she gets them every few months so she's on antibiotics) and has started CRF...AND ear mites, which none of the other cats have!

(19,288 posts)She was born on the day my dad died, in 1998, with 3 other litter mates. The mom was champagne striped and had a little kinked tail. She was rescued off a farm. The dad cat must have been a black and white tom. So Ralph got the mix of colors and no tail.
She has a lump on her thyroid and I have to give her a pill twice a day. It has been awful. I finally started crushing and putting it on her food. Then she quit eating. The original tumor I took her in for has shrunk so small I can't feel it. It's a mast cell tumor and has to come out according to the vet. I have an option of $1100.00 chemo or 650.00 surgery. Now, suddenly she's so sick she has barfed all over my house. I think she maybe plugged up with a hairball but how can you tell? She poops outside. So anyway she is not ready to be put to sleep but not thriving whatsoever.

(56,177 posts)You're right, with older cats you ahve to wonder, is it simply a hairball because I know their stomachs get more sensitive with age, or more? Good luck...I'm sure you'll do what's best.

(56,177 posts)When I had Melanie put down I thought it might have been a little too early...she was stumbling, and had trouble holding herself up, but that day she was ok at times...then when this happened to Scarlet, on a Friday, I decided to make an appointment for Monday to ahve the last weekend with her and I shouldn't have, because she got really bad Saturday...and I spent the whole weekend in bed just holding her...that told me I was right about Melanie. I don't think Scarlet was in pain, but she was clearly letting go....

(19,288 posts)This afternoon, sunning herself in the backyard. I called a pet store about the pills and they have a 'greenie' you can stick the pill into. Now, if her appetite picks back up it could work. I may buy some petromalt to put on her wrist. They will lick it off. I can't stand the idea of messing with her anymore than I have. She's so sweet and trusting. I hate to violate that even if it's for her own good.

(56,177 posts)anything...it's not good for the liver. She might have good days and bad days for a while and she'll tolerate the bad and at some point decide it's not worth it...cats know better when do, I think, when it should end.
