Interesting time of year at Farmers Markets....transition time. This AM in Raleigh -

Apples and Greens and Sweet Potatoes were the stars of the show...all sorts of apples (we aim for Mutsu, but there were also King Luscious, Arkansas Black, Cameo, Honey Crisp, and all of the more common ones....alas, no Russet types), apple cider - and collards, kale, mustards greens.

Here are there nice bunches of beets and turnips....some late season peppers (they get really expensive and look pretty tired), some beautiful broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages of different types, and Brussels sprouts.

Walking down into the plants and crafts sections were a few vendors with local honey (yum!), and - yes - the beginnings of pine Christmas decorations including some - gasp! - Christmas trees!

My refrigerator is now stuffed with produce and I need to be sure that we use it all during the week....tonight - roasted veggies (mix of beets, potatoes, carrots, peppers, sweet potatoes and onions), seasoned with rosemary, black pepper and salt, over quinoa with toasted walnuts!

1. I miss the Atlanta Farmers Market.

IMO: Produce isn't as good in New York.

Oh ... the tree fruit is great; apples and pears. So are the berries.

2. Persimmons and pomegranates mostly,

though this is out in the country, not at the farmer's markets. Some early citrus but it's pretty early for California. Most of the citrus doesn't start coming in in earnest until late December/early January. Lots of local honey.

3. Carrots!

I've been getting carrots in three different shades of orange and roasting them with a little olive oil and fresh rosemary...yum yum!

4. Fall produce, Christmas, and grave blankets.

I don't think they do grave blankets in many areas of the country. They sell a lot of them here.

Squash, hardy greens and brassicas, apples, eggs, honey, meat are the dominant things. One cut floral booth going year 'round, but it is all commercial, shipped in items save for a few types of greens and berries that persist against the cold. Crafts, jewelry, etc go all year, as do baked goods, jams and jellies, candy vendors.
