I'm quite fond of the little balls of mochi filled with bean paste, but I've never seen the donut shaped kind.

This shop by the way can be found in LITTLE TOKYO in Los Angeles. I wish we had one in our Japan town, but nothing like this as yet. Maybe they will branch out to include all of the Japan towns, including San Jose.

Also, Mochi can contain ice cream inside, like vanilla or green tea ice cream. They are certainly a wonderful treat from Japan.

Really? Never been to Little Tokyo?

Of course San Francisco's Nihon Machi is bigger, or the biggest in the USA, (There are three Japan towns in the United States: Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Jose!) I would love to visit the the ones in San Jose and Los Angeles. I have already visited KOREAN town in Los Angeles... that was hella fun!

Been coming to Little Tokyo for 25 years now.
My wife is Japanese and there are some pretty good authentic eateries around here.
She also shops at the Japanese grocery stores here so we can eat real Japanese at home too.

One problem, recently they started having really loud Karaoke sessions outside on the mall's stage.
Some of the singers drive me nuts.

If you go be sure to try the imagawayaki at the Mitsuru Cafe.
They make them fresh in the window all day so you get them warm, just made.

I'd be like a kid in a candy store if I were there.
Or like Winnie the Pooh stuck on a honeypot.

Damn.

They tried to switch over to metric and everyone had a fit. I don't recall what year that was. I thought in the UK they used
stone as a measurement.

There are similar Chinese pastries that I really like too. One of them if filled with ground peanut paste that I love.

I've had the chocolate mochi donut with sprinkles.
It was ice cold and had to warm up a few minutes before eating.
Very good but intensely sweet, so much so that I couldn't quite finish.

I love mochi desserts.

No goofy colors please. And no beans inside.

I tried putting it in leftover curry the other day. With cheese on top. That was extra gooey delish. I recommend it.
