Do you love Googie?

Have you ever heard of Googie? It's my favorite cultural phenomenon. Googie is roadside architecture from the 1950s-1960s. Influenced by the space age and the atomic age, but it also encompasses "phoney colonee" - tacky rip off of colonial architecture and Tiki such as tiki bars, tiki knick-knacks etc. Jetsons = googie the bowling alley in "The Big Lebowski" = googie. Boomerangs, atom clusters, star bursts, neon, all googie. I can't get enough.

In the early 90s, we used to go to a bowling alley just like the one in The Big Lebowski, in the San Gabriel Valley off the 210 freeway, before it was torn down to make way for a SavOn store which wasn't really needed. I wonder if, in fact, it was the same bowling alley as in the film?

We also used to go to a Tiki style bowling alley in Covina CA that is shown below and in "The Book of Tiki" by Sven A. Kirsten, aka Sven Tiki.

My whole house would be googie if I had a choice. I once heard it described as "optimistic" -- I agree with that -- how can you not be in a good mood surrounded by googie??
