(42,001 posts)And my favorite breeds never win, except for the Goldens a while back. I really like Foxhounds for the way they move and their spirit but I expect they'd want a far more active lifestyle than I would. Having had a Golden, a Bernese Mt. Dog and now a couple of Cavaliers (among others) I like watching those guys. I'm considering a French Bulldog someday so will enjoy seeing that one whenever I do.

I'm just glad the Peke didn't win. Many of the group winners were from less common breeds. Nice for a change --- I get a little bored with the same breeds always winning.

(14,881 posts)that the Peke was an imposter. Either Cousin Itt or a tribble. Not certain which. But I don't think there was a dog in there...

(6,151 posts)Just remember you don't want to keep one in an apartment. That high-test energy will manifest itself in destruction if not liberally exercised, and I don't mean frequent walks on a leash. They do need a leash in public, not from social aggression against people but because they'll chase anything that moves, and they're not afraid of the devil himself. They'll attack a pack of bigger dogs that don't step aside for them, too, so I personally wouldn't want to turn mine loose in a dog park.
I have their distant relative, a smooth coat Jack Russell with perhaps a little traveling salesman thrown in, and Brigid's handful enough in town in a huge fenced yard and lots of extreme ball games. At 6" over AKC limits for female JRT's, any outside blood in her veins might be foxhound, because except for size she's pure JRT in looks and behavior. I only got her because she was a little 3-month-old stray starveling and my Pom-mini Beagle cross Molly Maguire was lonesome. Adult JRT's and Foxhounds are known to dispatch new pets brought into the house, but Brigid was too young and weak to do any damage before she grew to love Molly like a littermate or older sister. Approaching her first birthday, Brigid's now extremely dominant but still with affection so I don't worry.
The smooth coats shed almost as badly as a Dalmatian, and the wires have to be kept rigorously groomed. Just remember those things when making your purchase decision, and that a JRT can climb chain link or jump over a 6' fence. I think JRT's are even fiercer than any Foxhound, because they were bred to follow the fox into its hole for the kill. Luckily they tend to love people, though.
