The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsName a performer / band you REDISCOVERED after getting sick of them for a while.
For me, it's Fleetwood Mac...and I'm a fan of all eras, from Peter Green to Buckingham Nicks, but I have to say that I OD'd on the Buckingham Nicks stuff back in the day (ESPECIALLY Rumours).
BUT...time passes and I have rediscovered just how tightly composed and impeccably arranged a lot of their songs were.
SO...what performer / band have you heard with fresh ears?

(39,343 posts)Sure, we all heard Can't Get No Satisfaction a few decades ago, but I've gone back and enjoyed their other work.
Pink Floyd was popular to like in highschool, but it was limited to Wall and Dark Side. Now those albums are rarely listened to because Animals, WYWH, Meddle, or something else is better.

(18,837 posts)...in the 60s / 70s, San Francisco's KSAN was probably THE greatest FM station on the planet (running in a tie for first place with Boston's WBCN).
KSAN used to play a lot of "deep album tracks" and "Going Home" received frequent airplay on the station.

(21,020 posts)think of any offhand.
Although I can think of one group I used to like that I no longer do.
Heart.
Since getting older, I've come to realize how truly screechy Ann Wilson's voice is. Hurts my ears and annoys the piss out of me.

(18,837 posts)I did enjoy the first four albums, back in the day...but I thought they peaked with the fourth one, "Dog and Butterfly." I liked it primarily for "Mistral Wind," which took Ann & Nancy's Led Zep fetish to its peak. After they recorded that song, for me, they had nothing left to say.
But they said it anyway.
I thought the next album, "Bebe le Strange," was pure trash, ESPECIALLY the title track. You want to talk about Ann annoying the piss out of you? I'd say that on that song she is at her most annoying. They had jumped the shark and never found their way back after that.

(100,076 posts)Love him or hate him, the guy made tons of great songs throughout his career. Beat It, Thriller, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Dirty Diana, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, They Don't Care About Us, the list goes on and on. And it was mainly because of This Is It. It would have been an incredible concert had he been able to pull it off.

(50,566 posts)just sort of stopped listening in the early 90s. Now, going back to the music, I'm realizing I love almost everything they ever put out.

(28,552 posts).... because reading your title I could not think of anyone offhand.
But then in the late 70s I got REAL TIRED of hearing the 6 or so songs from Rumours that got continual airplay around here. I mean change-the-goddam-station tired
But now that I didn't have to hear these songs over and over, I can more readily appreciate what a perfect work they are, they are all brilliant, every song on that album, perfect in every way.
Also a fan of "Then Play On".

(50,566 posts)Recently I decided that "Second Hand News" was one of the catchiest songs ever.

(10,098 posts)Recall seeing a thread similar to this a while back. Fleetwood Mac for me too, I'll put it away for a while and then for some reason get it out and play it over and over and over again.

(50,566 posts)My husband says he used to scoff at ELO when he was in high school, but lately I've been playing them and he has come to appreciate the genius of Jeff Lynne.

(24,931 posts)I liked them when I was in junior high, then got more into punk and new wave in high school, so thought of them as pop. Now I listen to them and really love the layers of their songs.

(18,837 posts)My favorite ELO album is still "Eldorado," especially the track "Laredo Tornado."

(23,340 posts)I still can't listen to "Stairway to Heaven".
Probably the most overplayed band on classic rock radio format.
Now I can go back and appreciate some of it, in small doses.

(18,837 posts)Plant's "Does anybody remember LAUGHTER???" but kind of make me sick back then, and I was REALLY relieved he kept the question to himself during the "Celebration Day" reunion.

(3,518 posts)I was a huge fan in the 70's but despised most of his hits of the 80's. After "Uptown Girl" his voice became downright annoying to me and I didn't listen to any of it for 20 years.
I dug out the old stuff a few years ago and have once again become a fan. Not of the new stuff, just the old stuff. I still cringe at "Uptown Girl".

(24,292 posts)Led Zeppelin, Chicago, The Tubes and Tower of Power come to mind immediately. I still own every record I ever bought, so something comes up whenever I crank up the turntable.

(7,237 posts)I listened to so much Rush in the 80's, I Rushed myself out.
Now I hear them differently and appreciate them again.
2112 and Permanent Waves are awesome albums.

(18,837 posts)I really like it...it got pretty strong reviews as well.

"Ultimately, Clockwork Angels demonstrates why, after 36 years, Rush's fan base continues to grow. Its musical athleticism and calisthenic discipline are equaled only by its relentless creative drive and its will to express it in a distinct musical language..."

(5,604 posts)every year, on the first few nights that it really feels like summer I completely get back into the Doors. Something about it and them rekindles a feeling of being an indestructible 18 year old who just dropped acid, surveying the landscape with curiosity and anticipation and thinking: bring it on.

(18,837 posts)They're usually pretty short, just long enough to scratch the itch, but I go through several per year.

(17,600 posts)I grew up on Born to Run and then decided Springsteen was too "pop" for me (LOL) and stopped listening for awhile. Then in 2004 when he toured with Kerry I woke the hell up and have been kicking myself ever since for missing all those years of great music.

(18,837 posts)This version is SO good that I really don't care for any of the other versions I've heard. I pretty much have every note and nuance memorized.
