Just polished off a bowl made with some dried cranberries, vanilla, milk, butter and sugar.
I love love love this stuff. You keep your slimy oatmeal. Farina for me.

(2,710 posts)and steel cut oats, right now I'm eating some Bob's Red Mill Seven Grain Hot Cereal. I love hot cereals! I like a dollop of honey and cream on top. Some fruit if I have it. Butter and sugar is also good. I could eat hot cereal for every meal.

The best part about hot cereal is that it's sooo filling. It really gets you through the morning.

Sometimes I end up skipping lunch because the cereal is so filling. I eat breakfast late because all I want is coffee first thing in the morning. So my meals are coffee, hot cereal, dinner.

(38,055 posts)...but I skip lunch too when I eat hot cereal in the morning. For most of my adult life I skipped breakfast and lunch, especially breakfast, except for coffee - which I drink all hours. Terrible, I know.

(32,149 posts)And, the 10-Grain. Yum! Can't find either around here any more. I like to eat them like grits, with a pat of butter and a little bit of salt, rather than with sugar and cream. Butter and a little bit of brown sugar is good for old-fashioned oatmeal that hasn't been cooked to death. Bob's Red Mill makes great oatmeal. It hasn't been rolled so much that it won't hold its shape during cooking.

And you can feel really good about buying from them because the company is employee owned (Bob gave it away to the employees) and excellent.

(38,055 posts)Pour out your desired amount of cereal in a measuring cup beforehand. Then, when the water's boiling, put your spoon in and stir while you pour the stuff in. Keep stirring. Don't stop until it's done. No lumps.

And the nutrition numbers are great - 1/4 cup dry has 5 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein.

(9,362 posts)It's 2 parts water to 1 part dry, but I add extra water. They absorb a lot and cook quickly (compared to steel cut oats or regular rice)... Anyway, I don't eat them sweet, I usually go the savory route. The mouth feel reminds me a bit like rustic mashed potatoes (with lumps)... sometimes I add sour cream or butter...
I've only tried Bob's Red Mill and Arrowhead. The Bob's Red Mill definitely tasted better. IMHO.
I had to google farina. I wasn't sure what it was. Looks like it can be whole wheat or brown rice. I'm avoiding wheat but I've had a good hot rice cereal before.

(38,055 posts)Is that a regional version. Maypo? At my rather limited Texas store I got Cream of Wheat, Malto-Meal and this Chocolate Mexican brand whose name escapes me. I bought the Mexican brand because it was the cheapest but I prefer Malto-meal.
EDIT ADD: My mistake. Not a Mexican brand. The brand is CoCo Wheats, made by Little Crow, a manufacturer in Indiana.

What is the difference between Maypo Maple Oatmeal and Maypo Vermont Style?
The difference between these two products is in the size, shape and texture of the oats. The oats used to manufacture Instant Maypo are thin rolled oat flakes. The texture and eating qualities of Instant Maypo are similar to other brands of oatmeal products. The oats used for Vermont Style Maypo are finely cracked oats or oat bits. The smooth and creamy texture of Vermont Style Maypo is a unique quality of this hot oat cereal. Both of these cereals have the same flavoring and have 2/3 less sugar than the leading brand of maple flavored oatmeal.
Well, it sounds delish regardless. I don't hate oatmeal, although I do find it a bit slimy. I just prefer farina and that includes cream of rice - which is really hard to find these days.

(31,578 posts)When I was very young, my folks bought some milk goats. When they sold the goats, I had gotten so used to the sweeter taste of goat milk that I wouldn't drink cow's milk unless they put Ovaltine in it. It had the best chocolate taste ever.

I always make it with milk and butter and sometimes add Nesquik Chocolate Powder to make it chocolatey
Honey or maple syrup instead of sugar also works
